Happy new year my reader, I wish 2012 to be a successful year for everyone. After many days sick in bed today I finally managed to do some work and review two tasks I had on hold(sorry guys), later I realized that students had completed 21 out of 24 task I had and I found that really impressive. Most of the tasks I had as a mentor where video tasks and translation tasks, basically things that will help newbies (and not only) to learn and do things easier with openSUSE. To be honest I never thought GCI would go so well and produced so high quality products but I have to say that things have changed a lot since I was a student and this was not so long ago ;-) .

I started along with the other 2 Stathis (Iosifidis and Agrapidis a.k.a Diamond_gr and Efagra), as they are GCI mentors too, to review the results of the work we got from it as a local community and so far it is quite amazing. Given the fact that the next few months we will try and improve the Greek wiki of openSUSE the GCI was so far a great help.

I really hope most of the students will stay around and continue the amazing work they do if not openSUSE in FLOSS generally.

A dot in the map

I don't ever remembering suggesting a site but to be honest I rarely fall into sites that not many people know and worth mentioning, also most of the times I do, I am a bit bored on blog about it so I eventually never do ;-)

Today though it's different, I am taking a break from a presentation it was supposed to be ready...Well...Yesterday, but I am still looking for the right kittens photos to complete this presentation(...don't ask...). Anyway normally I would just watch a movie or something but I am a bit in a mood to blog and latelly I had too much on my plate and had no time to do it, so here I am.

Anyway a friend of mine, Efstathios Chatzikyriakidis had this briliant and simple idea, to make a map where people around the world would state their possition in the map and the OS they use. Some of you might find this useless but I find interesting the fact that I could see the preferance of people around me on what Open Source or Free Software they use and some of you might too. The site is called OSHACKERS and it is licenced under the GNU GPLv3 and if you are curious I would suggest to give it a look and why no register...

openSUSE 12.1 RC2 installed

I was expecting RC2 for a week now since this was the deadline I had given myself in order to install 12.1. I am going to be honest, I was expecting problems and usually I wait for at least a month after the actual release date in order to install any distribution, I did that on 11.3 and on 11.4. I still don't consider myself an experienced Linux user but there was something in 12.1 one that made me trust my abilities and go on.

So I made coffee and started a clear installation. After the instalation finished I had a few problems but it was finally proven that all of the problems I had were PEBKAC problems and were solved due to the great patience people at the #opensuse-project and #opensuse-kde IRC channels showed with me.

I really got very impressed by 12.1, it is probably the fastest Linux Distribution I can remember I ever had,that systemd everybody are talking about and I still don't actually understand what it is seems to improved things a lot.
Stability was never really a problem on openSUSE and to be honest it is too soon to speak about that but I found no problems with that. Kernel 3.1 is working fine, nouveau driver worked just fine with my nvidia and there is no need to use a closed driver. KDE 4.7.2 is Great.
Generally I was impressed by 12.1 mostly because I was expecting to face some problems and I did not, either I am getting better, either openSUSE is coming again with another Great distribution made by the community to the community. What do you think?

Once again today I was reading the openSUSE Strategy community statement and I can get out of my head how wonderful the begging of the statement sounds:

'We are the openSUSE Community - a friendly, welcoming, vibrant, andactive community. This includes developers, testers, writers,translators, usability experts, artists, promoters and everybody elsewho wishes to engage with the project.'

The greater of all is that all of the people of openSUSE are making this more than a statement, people around the globe are working hard for this to be a reality. You can come to the openSUSE Conference in Nuremberg and feel that in person. Learn what RWX³ means in action.

Desktop summit 2011: A reason to dislike some of my friends

Being a firefighter is a work I love. Some of the things I learned to live without are summer vacations, camping, fishing and sailing. I gave up those pleasures of life due to my love and commitment to my work. This of course doesn't make me less jealous when some of my friends are doing things I REALLY love to do too.

My friends Stathis, Stella and Theo are going to Desktop Summit, an event I would really love to go. Also this Summer DS is in Berlin, a city that I always wanted to go and actually planned a trip there for more than 2 times and always on the last minute something happened and the trip was canceled. They are going there and they will be with Jos Poortvliet and Izabele Valverde from openSUSE whom I missed a lot since the marketing Hackfest, also they will meet Andreas Jaeger before me and yes I dislike them for that too. They will also do a lot of things I wanted to do, see a lot of interesting events, participate in workshops and be on those DS party that I heard are amazing.

I just hope that they will bring me back a lot of presents in order to gain my sympathy again ;-)

Go there and have a great time people as I am sure you will, maybe next year will go together...

"Η οργανωτική ομάδα βρίσκεται στην ευχάριστη θέση να ανακοινώσει ότι έχουν ανοίξει οι εγγραφές για το συνέδριο openSUSE που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στη Γερμανία, στην πόλη της Νυρεμβέργης, στις 11 με 14 Σεπτεμβρίου. Πηγαίνετε στη φόρμα εγγραφής και εγγραφείτε. Έτσι μας βοηθάτε να οργανωθούμε καλύτερα για μια καταπληκτική εκδήλωση.

Ναι, ήρθε η ώρα να αρχίσετε να ετοιμάζετε το ταξίδι σας στη Νυρεμβέργη!

Προετοιμασία

Σε δύο μήνες από τώρα θα πραγματοποιηθεί το συνέδριο openSUSE και SUSE Labs στη Νυρεμβέργη της Γερμανίας. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι, επειδή τα αεροπορικά εισιτήρια δε φθηναίνουν, πρέπει να αρχίσετε να ετοιμάζεστε! Ζητήστε άδεια από το αφεντικό σας, αρχίστε να ενημερώνετε τους καθηγητές σας ότι δε θα είστε παρόντες στις 11 - 14 Σεπτεμβρίου. Και φυσικά αρχίστε να βρίσκεται φτηνές πτήσεις ή εισιτήρια τρένου. Κάντε κράτηση στο ξενοδοχείο και είστε έτοιμοι να εγγραφείτε για το συνέδριο. Φυσικά μην ξεχάσετε να υποβάλλεται μια συνεδρία αν θέλετε να κάνετε κάποια παρουσίαση, να οργανώσετε ένα BoF (συνάντηση ομάδας), να πραγματοποιήσετε μια συνεδρία hack ή ένα workshop.

Ξενοδοχείο

Η ομάδα του συνεδρίου openSUSE έχει φτιάξει μια λίστα με ξενοδοχεία όπου μπορείτε να μείνετε κατά τη διάρκεια του συνεδρίου. Σας συνιστούμε να προτιμήσετε κάποιο από αυτά τα ξενοδοχεία καθώς θα έχουν μόνο συμμετέχοντες του συνεδρίου (fellow geekos), έχουν λογικές τιμές (ειδικές τιμές για τους συμμετέχοντες του συνεδρίου!) και φυσικά δεν είναι πολύ μακρυά από τον χώρο διεξαγωγής, στο Zentrifuge.

Ταξίδι

Για μερικούς από εσάς ένα ταξίδι στη Νυρεμβέργη δεν είναι κάτι εύκολο από οικονομικής απόψεως. Ίσως είστε φοιτητής ή πρέπει να έρθετε από πολύ μακρυά. Τα γνωρίζουμε όλα αυτά πολύ καλά και είναι ο κύριος λόγος για τον οποίο ψάχνουμε συνεχώς για χορηγούς! Μπορείτε να υπολογίζετε να δείτε σχετική ανακοίνωση σε μία εβδομάδα περίπου, σχετικά με το τι και πώς μπορούμε να σας βοηθήσουμε οικονομικά να ταξιδέψετε και να είστε σίγουροι ότι θα κάνουμε ό,τι μπορούμε ώστε μέλη της κοινότητας από μακρυά ή με οικονομικές δυσκολίες μπορούν να έρθουν και να συμμετέχουν κι αυτοί μαζί μας!

Εγγραφή

Η εγγραφή σας εξασφαλίζει καρτελάκι για εσάς στο συνέδριο χωρίς να χρειάζεται να περιμένετε στην ουρά μέχρι να σας ετοιμάσουμε ένα εκείνη τη στιγμή. Επίσης σας προσφέρει πρόσβαση στο ασύρματο ίντερνετ και σας εξασφαλίζει μια θέση στο πάρτυ! Και φυσικά μας δίνει τη δυνατότητα να οργανώσουμε καλύτερα τα πάντα, επομένως έχει σημασία να εγγραφείτε το συντομότερο δυνατό αν σκοπεύετε να έρθετε!
Να σημειωθεί ότι για να εγγραφείτε δε χρειάζεται να δημιουργήσετε λογαριασμό. Θα πρέπει να κάνετε κράτηση σε ξενοδοχείο μόνοι σας, ρίξτε μια ματιά σε αυτή τη σελίδα!
Τέλος, υπάρχει η δυνατότητα για 2 διαφορετικά εισιτήρια. θέλω να ξέρεις ότι οι κατάρες σου έπιασαν τόπο και ότι μετά από 3 χρονάκια σήμερα κάποιος πήγε να με σκοτώσει ενώ πήγαινα κανονικά με το μηχανάκι μου, μιας και το θεώρησε πρέπον να περάσει από πάνω μου για να παρκάρει.Την γλύτωσα με ένα σπασμένο δάχτυλο του ποδιού και κάτι γρατσουνιές. Σε παρακαλώ τώρα που είναι καλοκαίρι σταμάτα τις καταρες γιατί θα ήθελα να κάνω και κάνα μπανάκι μέχρι να τελειώσει το καλοκαίρι.

TheHackerspace opening: When Great things happen

I rarely envy people, one of the times I did it was when some guys from Athens announced the creation of a Hackerspace there. I also envied them wen i saw that they started making good work and organizing well. After that I heard about the creation of P-space at Patras and I thought that it was only a mater of time for some people to make something similar to my City.

A few weeks ago I heard that Efstathios Hatzikyriakidis along with Stavros Kalapothas and Stergios Kalamopoulos where starting a local Hackerspace. I knew Efstathios and he had helped me on the past when I once sent him an e-mail because I wanted some help for Arduino. He was very helpful back then and in a way he had earned my trust.

So yesterday it was The-Hackerspace opening, and it was an open invitation for everyone to attend and have a talk about our City's Hackerspace. Almost 30 people where there, all curious and all genuine interesting (at least from what I can tell) for it. We had very interesting talks while waiting for the organizers to present us their ideas about the-Hackerspace and you could find all kind of people among us, from hackers to Window users.

At a certain point the people that gathered us all there got our attention and started presenting us their way of thinking of how they would like the-Hackerspace to work. I was amazed. Their ideas were (are) progressive but at the same time doable. I admit that it was far from what I expected to see in a good way. From what I saw and from the talk we had after their short presentation, other people had the same opinion with me. After that we had a cake and a few hours later we left with the best impressions.

If you are from Thesssaloniki or from a city near there is no excuse for not at least make a visit there. You can find more information about the location of the-Hackespace at http://the-hackerspace.org/location/.

In a city that Great things rarely happen, the-Hackerspace is something at least innovating and it surely deserves our attention and support.

openSUSE Summer Camp Greece 2011

Summer in Greece! Is the weather too hot for you to code or contribute to your favorite FOSS project? Do you need some motivation and a refreshing swim? Come to our Summer Camp!
The Greek openSUSE community is organizing its first openSUSE Summer Camp, in central Greece at Grand Platon Hotel at Olympiaki akti. This is is the beach of the city of Katerini. The doors will be open from the 15th to the 17th of July 2011, at the Heart of Summer!

Sounds awesome, I’ll book my tickets.

So, you’ll be there. What can you expect?
Our goal is to bring FOSS communities closer and encourage people to contribute to their favorite projects.
A lot of people, with little to a lot of experience can benefit from the workshops included in our program, during which we will work on things like translation, wiki usage, coding, packaging and much more, showing how to work inside a community and how to collaborate with others!

Hmmm. But I could go swimming…

There will be relaxing and swimming of course! But hey, we have a common passion, don’t we?
We love what we do, we are having fun contributing to FOSS and we hate doing it alone in our rooms during Summer time. Besides coding, translating and all other ‘working stuff’ there will also be plenty of sun and beach, a large swimming pool and plenty of beers – all paid by you since we only sponsor the sun, the fun and all the other free stuff…

openSUSE strategy voting close to the finish line!

As we wrote three weeks ago, June 30th is the deadline for voting for the openSUSE Strategy!

Relevance

2 years ago the subject came up at the openSUSE conference: what do we want? That is not a simple question. We are a large community with wide-ranging diverse backgrounds, goals and interests.
Having a coherent answer matters: it shows potential new contributors what they can (although not limited) contribute to; it helps us make decisions. Do we focus on fancy web stuff? Do we go for a stable or more experimental product? Do we simplify at all costs or cater to more advanced users? These and more are questions brought up in our strategy discussion.

Discussion

It took a long time – we are an open community and as such, strategic discussions take time. However, we went through the effort. Lots of input came from a variety of people – each iteration had sometimes over a hundred comments. You can view some of the although you should notice that co-ment is just one of the ways we collected feedback (others being the mailing lists, IRC, forums and more).

Serious

While the current proposal is not meant to be limiting new directions or will be forever set in stone, it is meant to provide clarity to our community for the time being. So we do want it to be taken seriously. We develop major software products promoting open source and the use of Linux world wide. We’re a major Linux distribution, the second largest by most metrics. We provide a packaging build service that is used by distributions more than just openSUSE. We have an obligation to deliver a consistent, quality product to our users. And to provide an open and fun place to be around for contributors. We can’t satisfy every need to the fullest, but what we can do is make clear what we are trying to do here.
Providing that clarity to our users and contributors through this strategy is a major step towards our future. So, we need our membership to vote. To make your voice heard and to know if it truly has the support it needs.
So, if you’re an openSUSE Member, go, read the document one more time and cast your vote!

openSUSE releases milestone 2

About 3 weeks after the first milestone for openSUSE 12.1, today the second milestone has been made available. Following the Roadmap, this is the second of 6 milestone until the openSUSE 12.1 release in November.

Milestones

openSUSE is developed in a repository called Factory. Packages flow from the devel projects into Factory upon OK from the release team following the Factory Development Model. During the development cycle (more detailed model) periodic releases are made available for testing – these are the milestones. Six of them become available. After some several freezes go into effect, the component freeze just before the fourth milestone for instance. And about a couple of weeks after the last milestone the first of two Release Candidates is made ready for testing. The final openSUSE 12.1 release is expected on November 11th.

Progress since the previous milestone

The first milestone had a huge number of changes and improvements on top of the latest openSUSE release. Again, many packages have been updated. You can check the latest package versions on this page. What are the major changes?

Firefox 5 RC
Horde4 packages (php5-pear-horde)
“The Board”
rawstudio
llvm/clang 3.0 snapshot
many smaller updates to KDE and GNOME applications and desktops

Also nspluginwrapper is now updated which will allow a more stable Flash plugin on 64bit platforms. With this change you can now watch two flash videos at the same time. And over 100 new packages have been added, including extensions for Banshee, some small tools like DDS2tar and brainfuck interpreter, Cdecl (turns C/C++ gibberish into English), cint (small C/C++ interpreter) and a number of other devel and language tools.

systemd

On the openSUSE project and factory mailing lists a discussion is taking place centered around the new systemd init system. After the introduction of the road to systemd for openSUSE 12.1 by Frederic Crozat, issues, complaints and limitations of systemd are being discussed and dissected. Changing an init system is an invasive change and systemd has ambitions beyond just replacing sysV not everyone always agrees with. Work will be needed to ensure a stable and usable init system for 12.1 and the team welcomes help and bugreports!

Helping out easier than ever!

As expected from a development release, there is still a lot of work to do, so your input at this early stage will be a huge help in making the final release into the beautifully polished work that we aim for. openSUSE 12.1 Milestone 2 has a list of most annoying bugs here, please add issues you find and help fix them. As Will Stephenson recently blogged, fixing an issue is a matter of BURPing on build.opensuse.org! Find a how-to here.

1ο openSUSE collaboration weekend camp

Ο καιρός έχει ζεστάνει για τα καλά και ήρθε λοιπόν η ώρα να κανονίσουμε

...τις καλοκαιρινές μας εξορμήσεις!

Για φέτος είχαμε μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ιδέα...

Σκεφτήκαμε να κάνουμε κάτι διαφορετικό!

“Μια εκδρομούλα που θα συνδυάζει παραλία με ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ!”

Έτσι λοιπόν θα μαζευτούμε όλοι μαζί δίπλα στη θάλασσα για να παρακολουθήσουμε διάφορα workshops (μην ξεχάσετε να φέρετε τα laptop σας!) και θα δουλέψουμε πάνω στα αγαπημένας μας project!

Ελληνική κοινότητα Mageia

Το Madriva ήταν εξ' απ' ανέκαθεν μια από τις διανομές που μου άρεσαν ιδιαίτερα. Το φόρουμ τους, ήταν πολύ εξυπηρετικό και τα παιδιά εκεί βοηθούσαν αρκετά και ήταν ευγενικότατοι. Χτες μου ήρθε μια ειδοποίηση στο mail μου για την δημιουργία του νέου τους φόρουμ. Είναι ακόμη στην αρχή αλλά είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα πάει το ίδιο καλά. Κατέβασα το iso και το Σ/Κ θα το εγκαταστήσω για να το δοκιμάσω, σε καμία βδομάδα θα σας πω και τις εντυπώσεις μου, αν και είμαι πολύ θετικά προδιατεθειμένος με την συγκεκριμένη διανομή και με την δικτυακή κοινότητα.

Εξόρμηση ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ

Το ξυπνητήρι χτύπησε 5:45 και σηκώθηκα αμέσως από φόβο μην με πάρει ο ύπνος πάνω στο χουζούρεμα, έφτιαξα καφέ στον φούρνο μικροκυμάτων,έκανα ένα γρήγορο ντουζάκι και ετοίμασα την τσάντα μου. Απάντησα κάποια από τα μέηλ μου και η ώρα ως δια μαγείας είχε πάει 7:15, πήρα ένα ταξί και πήγα στον σταθμό τον τρένων. Προορισμός: Λάρισα

Ένα από τα πράγματα που λατρεύω είναι οι μικρές εξορμήσεις, όταν αυτό συνδυάζετε και με κάτι ενδιαφέρον όπως ένα συνέδριο για το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ με πολλές και ενδιαφέρουσες ομιλίες, τότε μιλάμε για μια πολύ καλή φάση.
Πολλοί ίσως αναρωτηθείτε για ποιον λόγο δεν έκατσα Θεσσαλονίκη να δω το κομμάτι του συνεδρίου εκεί και αποφάσισα να μπω στην διαδικασία να πάω στην Λάρισα, σας είπα ότι λατρεύω τις εξορμήσεις; Επίσης αποφάσισα να εκμεταλλευτώ στο έπακρο τις 2 μέρες ρεπό που είχα όσο ακόμη το καλοκαίρι δεν είναι στα φόρτε του. Σημαντικός παράγοντας και ότι ήθελα να δω τους φίλους μου εκεί καθώς και να μπω για ακόμα μια φορά στο φανταστικό κλίμα που επικρατεί στο δωματιάκι του Linux Team.

Παρόλο που είχα αποφασίσει να είμαι τουρίστας αυτή την φορά και να μην μπλεχτώ με booth και τέτοια τελικά με 'έχωσε' ο Diamond_gr στο Gnome3, νιαρφ. Δεν πειράζει, την επόμενη φορά...

Το τρένο φτάνει σε λίγο και παρόλο τον καφέ που ήπια ακόμα νυστάζω, πράγμα που υπερνικά την θέληση μου να μπλογκάρω, οπότε...

Πως μπορείτε να συνεισφέρετε στο openSUSE και σε άλλα έργα ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ;

Μετά από δυο πολύ καλές παρουσίες, κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη και όχι μόνο, της κοινότητας σε 2 μεγάλα γεγονότα όσων αφορά το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ της κοινότητας openSUSE, το openFEST 2011 και την Fosscomm στη Πάτρα και κατά τον απολογισμό αυτών προέκυψε ότι ένα από τα ποιο σημαντικά και συχνά ερωτήματα ήταν:
-Πώς μπορώ να συνεισφέρω στο Project;
Κατά την άποψή μου αυτό το ερώτημα δεν είχε να κάνει μόνο με το δικό μας έργο. Κατάλαβα ότι όλες οι κοινότητες ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ λέμε στον κόσμο τι κάνουμε, καλούμε τον κόσμο να συμμετέχει βοηθώντας στα διάφορα έργα μας αλλά τελικά ίσως δίνουμε λίγες πληροφορίες για το πως κάποιος μπορεί να συνεισφέρει σε αυτά. Με αποτέλεσμα πολλές φορές οι χρήστες να απομακρύνονται από τις κοινότητες νιώθοντας, λανθασμένα φυσικά, ότι δεν μπορούν να συνεισφέρουν κάτι.

Άσχετα με τον αν είστε ένας έμπειρος χρήστης ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ, προγραμματιστής ή ένας τελικός χρήστης, αρχάριος που μόλις κάνατε την πρώτη σας εγκατάσταση Gnu/Linux μπορείτε να προσφέρετε πολύτιμη βοήθεια σε οποιοδήποτε έργο ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ θα θέλατε.
Παρακάτω θα σας παρουσιάσω κάποιους μόνο από τους πολλούς τρόπους που μπορείτε να το κάνετε αυτό.

Αρχάριοι χρήστες

Μόλις κάνατε την πρώτη σας εγκατάσταση κάποιας διανομής, έχετε ενθουσιαστεί με το γραφικό σας περιβάλλον και με τις δυνατότητες τις οποίες σας προσφέρει το καινούργιο σας σύστημα. Είστε πολύ χαρούμενοι που δεν χρειάζεται να σπαταλήσετε χρήματα για εφαρμογές αλλά παρόλα αυτά αντιμετωπίζετε κάποια προβλήματα που δεν σας αφήνουν να χαρείτε όσο θα θέλατε και καμία φορά σας βγάζουν έξω από τα ρούχα σας και σας κάνουν να σκέφτεστε το παλιό σας λειτουργικό.

Πως όλη αυτή η κατάσταση μπορεί να σας κάνει να προσφέρετε πραγματικά σε ένα έργο ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ;

Γραφτείτε σε ένα από τα πολλά φόρουμ και λίστες ταχυδρομείου που υπάρχουν και αρχίστε να κάνετε ερωτήσεις ψάχνοντας τις λύσεις για τα προβλήματα σας. Αυτό δείχνει στους προγραμματιστές που υπάρχουν προβλήματα και στην κοινότητα που υστερεί η τεκμηρίωση τους.
Με τον καιρό θα μάθετε κάποια πράγματα με τα οποία θα μπορείτε αργότερα να βοηθήσετε με την σειρά σας άλλους χρήστες. Το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ πέρα από μια μεγάλη γκάμα προγραμμάτων και λειτουργικών συστημάτων είναι και στάση ζωής μέσα στην οποία η αλληλοβοήθεια μεταξύ των χρηστών παίζει πολύ σημαντικό ρόλο. Η αίσθηση ότι κάποιος σας βοηθάει χωρίς να έχει να κερδίσει κάτι από εσάς καθώς και το να βοηθάτε κάποιους χωρίς να θέλετε να κερδίσετε κάτι από αυτούς είναι με μια λέξη:Φανταστική

Όχι τόσο αρχάριοι χρήστες

Η γραμμή του πότε κάποιος χρήστης θεωρείτε αρχάριος και πότε όχι είναι κάτι που δύσκολα διακρίνετε. Συνήθως ένας χρήστης θεωρείτε όχι και τόσο αρχάριος (κατά την γνώμη μου), όταν χρησιμοποιεί το λειτουργικό του σύστημα ή τα όποια προγράμματα ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ τα οποία έχει, έχοντας λύσει όλα τα προβλήματα του και έχει κατανοήσει σε μεγάλο βαθμό πως αυτά λειτουργούν. Τότε είναι σε θέση να βοηθήσει και αυτός με την σειρά του κάποιους άλλους χρήστες και να κάνει αναφορές σφαλμάτων (Bug reports) για τα σφάλματα που πιθανών να προκύψουν σε αυτά που χρησιμοποιεί, μεταξύ άλλων.

Έμπειροι χρήστες

Η εμπειρία έρχεται με την εξοικείωση του χρήστη με το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ. Ένας έμπειρος χρήστης μπορεί να προσφέρει σχεδον σε όλες τις πτυχές του οποιουδήποτε έργου αυτός θέλει.
Μπορεί να κάνει αναφορές σφαλμάτων (Bug reports), να βοηθάει άλλους χρήστες και να γράφει τεκμηρίωση γύρω από τα προγράμματα τα οποία χρησιμοποιεί αν πιστεύει ότι αυτή υστερεί.

Όλοι οι χρήστες ανεξάρτητα από τον βαθμό εμπειρίας τους μπορούν να βοηθήσουν με πολλούς τρόπους.
-Μπορείτε να λέτε στον κόσμο τις εμπειρίες σας από το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ
-Μπορείτε να διαβάζετε τεκμηρίωση και να κάνετε διορθώσεις αρχίζοντας από την ορθογραφία ;-)
-Μπορείτε να βοηθήσετε στην μετάφραση της τεκμηρίωσης
-Μπορείτε να βοηθάτε στις διάφορες εκδηλώσεις σαν προσωπικό του booth
Τα παραπάνω είναι μόνο μερικά από τα πράγματα τα οποία μπορείτε να κάνετε για να βοηθήσετε το openSUSE και τα άλλα έργα ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ, το μόνο που χρειάζεστε είναι θέληση και διάθεση για δουλειά.

Why you should not be afraid to mingle with the openSUSE Project

I see many people coming to the openSUSE project but only a few of them (the new people) actually participate in the mailing list talks and on IRC channels talks.
I kept asking myself why? Why is this happening? Is there something wrong or what?
Recently I spotted a new openSUSE ambassador that was too 'tight' when we were talking about community matters and I took the opportunity to open a conversation with him about all of the above and what I got from that is that people are often don't say their opinion because they fear of saying something wrong, also they fear on saying their different opinion when they disagree with an older community member and other similar situations.

If you are one of those guys and you have similar fears FORGET THEM.
Community needs you to have a different opinion.
Community needs you to speak up.
Don't be afraid to expose yourself, you are among friends here.
This is free software baby, you cannot actually be wrong. Thinking differently is what started Free Software after all.
Saying out what you think is what makes openSUSE Project and community great.
Disagree with ANYONE if you think you have a point.
Do not leave other people guide you to places you don't want to go.
There are no Rockstars in our community.

openSUSE happy to welcome 16 GSOC students!

We’ve got excellent news! We’ve received many excellent submissions for our Google Summer of Code application and Google has given us 16 slots. This means that 16 eager students have been selected and will start working with their mentors on an awesome openSUSE project!
According to the GSOC timeline the students will now start with the Community Bonding period in which they have time to set up their development stuff, get acquainted with their mentors and get to know the openSUSE community. This means we’ll see those students on our communication channels, be it IRC, forums or mailing lists! Give them a warm welcome!
In a little over three weeks, the coding will start. I’m sure you’re all excited to find out what projects these students will be working on! Well, we were too, so we’ve compiled a nice list of the accepted proposals and asked a few students a quick quote on IRC!

SAX3

A project which will probably draw much praise is ‘SAX3′ which indeed, as the name suggests, aims to write a successor for the popular SAX tool. Manu Gupta, an Indian openSUSE contributor who has been around as openSUSE WIKI and marketing contributor will be mentored by Michal Hrusecky. Manu was jumping with joy following the “you’ve been accepted into GSOC” email on Monday, happy to have a chance to bring back

“one thing old openSUSE users were missing :)”

While Manu has been around openSUSE and might not have to introduce himself over the coming 3 weeks, he is still extremely happy with this opportunity. Promoting openSUSE and Free Software in general is not easy in India and having had the opportunity to work for an international community sponsored by such a well-known entity as Google will surely help him convince others of the value of Free Software!

fillup-ng

Christos “mpounta” Bountalis is a fresh Greek contributor from Salamis, an island near Athens. On the obvious question what Salamis has to do with the famous meat product he answered that they just sound similar… He got involved with openSUSE because he

“found many helpful and fun people, and that made me wanna be involved with openSUSE specifically”

So he found a cool GSOC idea on the wiki and sent in a proposal.

Christos wants to develop what he has temporarily named “fillup-ng”. In his own words:

“Fillup is a tool for merging sysconfig files which is widely used in openSUSE. fillup-ng, the tool that i will write will offer similar functionality with new features like support for other configuration files like xml, .ini maybe etc. fillup-ng will be implemented following a modular architecture that will support plugins and will make the process of maintaining and further improving the application a lot easier for everyone”

. For end users, fillup is sometimes useful to merge configuration files but mostly it is a tool ‘under the hood’ making the life of openSUSE developers easier.
And as our former board member Pascal “Yaloki” Bleser commented,

“it has to merge existing settings with your changes or defaults that come from the package, etc… hence not necessarily as trivial as it might sound :)”

OBS Plasmoid

We have to give a big Kudos! to Saurabh Sood. His GSOC project did not make it in the 16 slots but we heard from his mentor Will “Bille” Stephenson that he has decided to do it anyway! According to Bille:

“the preparatory work he has done in learning about javascript Plasmoids and OBS has inspired him to do the project voluntarily”

But those are just a few of the projects. You can find a list on the Google Summer of Code site here but we’ll include a short overview below.

Create a testsuite for btrfs features

Aditya wants to extend the XFS testsuite to test btrfs-specific functions like snapshot creation/deletion, balancing and relocation.

PackageKit backend and AppStream integration for Software Center

Alex Eftimie will be part of the AppStream initiative, porting Ubuntu’s Software Center to PackageKit and integrating OCS based metadata to provide a GNOME based software installer for openSUSE.

Heroku like solution for SUSE Studio

Bjørn Arild Mæland wants to work on the Dister command line tool. He aims to add support for Rack (Ruby) and WSGI (Python) compliant web frameworks. The goal is to improve the user experience so people and make for example the use of direct Amazon EC2 deployment easy.

openSUSE Build Service (OBS) for Android

Justine Leng wants to improve and add to the interface, not only making the Android OBS interface more powerful but also more stable by writing a test suite.

new python obs library (osc code cleanup)

Marcus Hüwe will cleanup the osc (command line tool for OBS) code and refactor it into a new python OBS library and make sure osc uses it.

SUSE bug reporter

Mihnea Dobrescu-Balaur aims to write a SUSE bug reporter to help users submit bugreports more easily while at the same time ensuring better quality.

Separating and Porting YUI library to other operating systems (Linux Based)

N.B.Prashanth wants to separate the YUI library from YaST. In YaST, YUI is responsible for allowing to have separate GUI frontends for one backend code. YUI supports GTK, Qt as well as ncurses but currently only works on (open)SUSE due to its dependency on YaST. Having a separated YUI will allow other projects to use it to write toolkit-independent applications.

Add ext4 snapshots support to snapper

Piyush will add Ext4 support to Snapper, the btrfs snapshot management tool in openSUSE.

Command line client for Suse Studio Abstract

Ratan aims to develop a command-line tool to build appliances.

ICC Device Profile Repository

Sebastian Oliva will create a a color database to allow clients to request or submit color profiles for color managed devices. Color profiles are critical to ensure accurate color reproduction on print and screen content.

Creating a browser-based user interface test-suite

Stoyan Dimkov will design and implement an automated browser-based test-suite for the web interface of OpenSUSE Build Service.

Porting Wubi to OpenSUSE

weijie yang wants to simplify OpenSUSE’s installation for new users. He will do this by taking Ubuntu’s Wubi tool and porting it to openSUSE.

Wow

Yes, it is an impressive list of projects. While usually not all GSOC projects succeed, these proposals were pretty solid and we have high expectations of the students. Of course, it will depend not only on them. Mentors will need to be available and for the rest of us – we also need to help out! Not only by being welcoming, giving advice and answering their questions but also by keeping them engaged and asking questions, showing interest in what is going on!
We wish the Google Summer of Code students as well as anyone else who’s using this opportunity to get involved with Free Software the very, very best the coming 4 months!

openSUSE Tumbleweed status for the week of April 22, 2011

Here's a short note as to the status of some recent activity in the
openSUSE:Tumbleweed repo:

- new kernel updates tracking the upstream stable 2.6.38 releases.
- lxde (and its sub-packages) was added
- calibre was added
- other smaller packages were added
- KDE update seems stable and working. It's in the
openSUSE:Tumbleweed:KDE repo if anyone wants to test it out now. I'll
be working next few weeks to merge this into the main
openSUSE:Tumbleweed repo as my bandwidth allows.
- There is a GNOME 3.0 Tumbleweed repo at openSUSE:Tumbleweed:GNOME.
It's properly building right now, but the same caveats remain for the
main GNOME 3.0 repo (i.e. network manager issues with KDE, and other
minor stuff), so I can't merge it to the main openSUSE:Tumbleweed repo
just yet. I'll wait for these changes to settle down, but if you
want, feel free to try out the repo for your GNOME 3.0 systems running
Tumbleweed. I'll keep it up to date as the changes merge into the
main GNOME 3.0 repo.
- artwork questions were raised with one proposed logo already sent in.
More to come in this area hopefully soon.
- There were a few "version downgrades" that happened as the upstream
project release number was changed to reflect the basesystem release
number correctly. This will probably continue to happen as this
change is propagated throughout the openSUSE build system to fix up
these errors by the various developers. You can safely ignore them
when they happen.

As always, if anyone knows of any packages they wish to see added to
Tumbleweed, please let me know.

GSoC - DOs and DON'Ts

Soon we'll all hear the news on the students accepted to Google Summer of Code. I'm excited and I'm sure so are a lot of students!

Once the news is in, it is time to start getting to know your mentor, getting your development environment up and starting to code. To help students, mentors and admins, let me echo a post by Lydia Pintscher to Planet openSUSE pointing to three blogs about DOs and DON'Ts she wrote with two other experienced GSoC mentors:

Donnie Berkholz from X.org and Gentoo, Kevin Smith from XMPP and I have written a series of blog posts for Google’s Open Source blog about the dos and don’ts of Google Summer of Code. Check them out. They have useful tips no matter your role in GSoC. There is a post for students, admins and mentors.

I think I can summarize many of the tips for students as: take a GSoC project serious, it a real job! There is a serious commitment on the side of the organization (mentoring!) as well as the side of Google (payment!). And there is a lot in it for you, not just the money but also the learning opportunity. And a successful GSoC looks good on your resume as well!

Resume?

Don't underestimate the value of GSoC and work in a FOSS community in general on your resume. As you know, all employers want 18 year old employees with 20 years experience. So having done some work in a FOSS community counts!

And as Boudewijn said in the first comment on the tips for students, taking your summer job for Google & your project serious also means you don't disappear at the end of the summer. It looks BAD to an employer as it signals little commitment to what you do. Especially if you have delivered "almost-ready code" which you never finish. You're basically saying that you are not very reliable!

Don't think potential employers won't see your GSoC work. Most, and especially the better employers, will do a search on your name and have a good look at the results. It is very likely that, once you've finished your GSoC, googling your name finds your project in the top-3 results. Moreover, if you hang around and keep doing some work, you'll learn more, build up an even more valuable resume and you'll more likely to be able to give your mentor up as a reference to a future employer.

fun

There's no guarantee, but maybe your GSoC one day leads to a job at a Free Software company. And a job in a Free Software company is more fun, really. You often get not only more pay (frankly not that important once you make enough to live OK) but also more responsibility and respect. Even if you get a job which isn't Free Software related, if you have the experience of working in a community, you will have a better position in your first job. You'll know better how to interact with people. How to write readable, maintainable code. When to ask questions. Who to ask. Such skills are useful so you're a more valuable employee - one who gets more choice, freedom and responsibility!

Taking your GSoC serious also means more fun on a personal level. At least I'd argue that having your code finished, shipped to a few million users and having your name on it as developer or maintainer is not just cool on your resume but pretty awesome in general!

Even without Google

Last but not least, as Boudewijn blogged, GSoC is not the only way to get most of the benefits of becoming part of a Free Software community! Even if your GSoC project was not accepted, you can ask if you can do it anyway. Mentors often have no problem mentoring you without a GSoC and while you don't get the money, meaning you'll probably have to find another summer job, you'll still get to code, learn & become part of the team.

so...

So. Take your GSoC project serious. It means more fun and better results. Both for yourself now as well as for your future!

Hard Rock and Free Software: part one

Some days ago I was reading again a book about Terminal command line and at some point I felt like listening to music and especially some good old 80's Rock so I picked one of my favorite play-lists and BANG, Skid Row Poetry right in to my face...

So listening to those lyrics of 'Youth Gone Wild' I started thinking what are the similarities when I was starting my life as a Rocker and my life as a Free Software supporter. I found many similarities that I hadn't noticed until that day. I was shocked to be honest, so I thought why not blog about it? And here we are, as always continue reading at your own risk ;-)

1) Family affairs

Well when I was a young boy and started to listen to rock my father wanted to send me to an exorcist because he thought I was possessed, to be honest I felt possessed my self with all that energy that music had that I never experienced before.

When I grew up (?!?) and discovered Free Software, my father though I was possessed for a second time in my life since he suddenly saw me standing in front of a screen reading for hours, standing still, I also felt a bit strange since the power of knowledge of that new stuff filled me with energy once again.

2)Surrounding Community

Back then, when I started listening to Rock and I went to my friends with a tape filled with Aerosmith, Twisted Sister, Deep purple and Scorpions they thought I was becoming something else that they don't like so we split and I was alone until I found some other Rockers and started crush in to places where we spent all of our time listening to Rock, some of us tried to learn to play guitar and drums. We were part of a community.

When I started using Free Software and I tried to talk to my friends about it and shared them some live Cd's I had made for them, they said that I was loosing my mind, so I was alone until I found others like me and a LUG where we crushed all of our free time and running various Linux distro's, some of us tried to learn Python, Java and Pearl. We were part of a community.

3)Freedom of doing whatever you want, freedom to fail.

As Rockers we started playing guitars and drums and we didn't have to be good, we didn't wanted to be professionals, we just cared to play. We organized gigs and we were drinking beers. Many times we were having gigs with just our friends, some times even without them, we are talking about epic fails but we didn't actually care because we did what we wanted just because we liked the whole situation, we didn't want to make money out of it, we did it for ourselves and that is why we had great fun with it.( Although we all dreamed at least once to become RockStars)

As Free Software users we started writing code(not me :-p ) testing various distributions and also building custom distributions based on other distributions or playing with various GUI's, we don't care if what we are making actually works most of the times and we enjoy failing, since we liked the road better than the actual destination. We tried to convince people test what we do. Sometimes some of our friends did that,sometimes not even our friends accepted to try it. We didn't actually get bothered by it(at least for a long time). We didn't care about making money out of it, we had our jobs. We did it(and still do it) for ourselves and that is why we have great fun with it.(Although we all dreamed ourselves at least once as the next Linus Torvalds).

Hardware Hacking: Το μεγάλο κάψιμο

Πολλά πράγματα μου έκαναν εντύπωση κατά την επίσκεψη μου στην SCaLE. Ένα από τα πράγματα αυτά ήταν το hardware hacking και η ενασχόληση του κόσμου με το λεγόμενο Free Hardware.
Στην Ελλάδα το ποιο γνωστό από όλα αυτά είναι φυσικά το arduino για το οποίο πρόσφατα έλαβα πολλές χρήσιμες πληροφορίες από τον Ευστάθιο Χατζηκυριακίδη ο οποίος είναι και από τους Έλληνες που 'το έχουν' σε αυτόν τον τομέα και τον οποίο επί της ευκαιρίας ευχαριστώ πολύ για την βοήθεια.
Γνώρισα τα παιδιά του Crashspace και έπαθα την πλάκα μου, Κολλητήρια μοβ μονόκεροι, τρισδιάστατους εκτυπωτές και arduino για να τους ράψεις στα ρούχα σου η για να φτιάξεις καπέλα που δείχνουν τον μαγνητικό βορρά Κάψιμο μεν ως ενός σημείου, απίστευτες κατασκευές από την άλλη και πάνω από όλα απίστευτο γέλιο και εποικοδομητική σκέψη. ότι μπορούσες να σκεφτείς, αυτοί μπορούσαν να το κάνουν κατασκευή...

Base System

openSUSE always concentrates on a stable foundation that is usable for different workloads. The base system of 11.4 brings better scalability and performance, an enhanced boot processes and significantly faster repository refresh, package install and update.

11.4 is based around Kernel 2.6.37 which improves the scalability of virtual memory management and separation of tasks executed by terminal users, leading to better scalability and performance and less interference between tasks. The new kernel also brings better hardware support, with open Broadcom Wireless drivers, improved Wacom support and many other new or updated drivers. It also supports the improvements to graphic drivers in the latest Xorg and Mesa shipped, so users will enjoy better 2D and 3D acceleration.
New tools for an enhanced boot process. The latest gfxboot 4.3.5 supports VirtualBox and qemu-kvm while Vixie Cron has been replaced with Cronie 1.4.6 supporting the PAM and the SELinux security frameworks. The more experimental software options include GRUB2 and systemd.
The ZYpp package management introduces a MultiCurl backend, support for zsync transfers, and Metalink download support. With simultaneous downloads from multiple servers, and fetching of only changed parts of files, the result is a significantly faster repository refresh, package install and update. The new backend gives better support for network proxies and allows for HTTP BASIC password-protected repositories. On the desktop, KPackageKit replaces the KDE applet and both KDE and GNOME applets now default to installing all package updates, not just patches.

Desktops and Applications

openSUSE is committed to flexibility and choice, providing all major desktops and a full range of applications, well integrated and supported. The desktops and applications of 11.4 take the next step with a revamped user experience, all the popular up to date Free Software applications and consistent functionality even in lighter desktops.

The KDE Plasma Desktop 4.6 introduces script-ability to window manager KWin and easier Activity management as well as improvements to network and bluetooth handling. Stable GNOME 2.32 improves usability and accessibility. 11.4 also has GNOME Shell, part of the upcoming GNOME3, available for testing. This brings a fully revamped user experience with a visual and intuitive way of launching and switching between applications, making heavy use of 3D acceleration, window tiling, integrating notifications and messaging in the shell. Xfce 4.8 now makes use of the GIO VFS implementation for better remote file system browsing as well as udev, ConsoleKit and PolicyKit. The lighter weight LXDE 0.5 hasn’t seen any major changes with this release but continues to enhance stability and usability with a series of bugfixes, improved file association and theming.
Firefox 4.0, first to ship in 11.4, introduces a major redesign of the user interface with tabs moved to the top of the toolbar, support for pinning of tabs and more. Firefox Sync synchronizes bookmarks, history, passwords and tabs between all your installations. Firefox 4 also supports newer web standards like HTML5, WebM and CSS3. 11.4 includes even more of the popular up to date Free Software applications as it’s the first major distribution to ship LibreOffice 3.3.1. Delivering it’s cleaner, faster code base and features like import and edit SVG files in Draw, support for up to 1 million rows in Calc and easier slide layout handling in Impress. 11.4 also débuts the result of almost 4 years of work with the Scribus 1.4 release based on Qt 4 and Cairo technology. Improved text rendering, undo-redo, image/color management and vector file import are highlights of this release.
openSUSE offers deep integration of all these technologies. By carefully creating ‘patterns’ of software, openSUSE ensures consistent functionality even in lighter desktops like XFCE and LXDE. Keyboard shortcuts are set, menu layouts tweaked, user-friendly file associations chosen and branding and theming integrated. 11.4 furthermore improves on the LibreOffice and Firefox integration in KDE Plasma, using native file dialogs, oxygen styling (also for GTK applications) and respecting the user’s mail client and browser choices.

Professional tools for administrators and developers

openSUSE aims to be the perfect power tool for system administrators to keep their network safe and their systems under control. And as developing and maintaining free software is the bread and butter task of the openSUSE Project the distribution naturally brings everything a software developer needs. 11.4 ships the latest virtualization and web server stacks and all the major development languages, platforms and associated IDEs.

11.4 brings the latest virtualization stack with Xen 4.0.2 introducing memory overcommit and a VMware Workstation/player driver, VirtualBox 4.0.4 supporting VMDK, VHD, and Parallels images, as well as resizing for VHD and VDI and KVM 0.14 with support for the QEMU Enhanced Disk format and the SPICE protocol. As guest, 11.4 includes open-vm-tools and virtualbox-guest-tools, and seamlessly integrates clipboard sharing, screen resizing and un-trapping your mouse.
openSUSE ships with the latest web server stack featuring Apache 2.2.17, lighttpd 1.4.26 and ngninx 0.8.54. As well as the main databases like version 9.0.3 of PostgreSQL, a release that brings major features like easy-to-use replication, a mass permission-changing facility, and anonymous code blocks. And MySQL 5.1.53 (community edition), and its fork MariaDB 5.1 that offers a drop-in replacement with better performance and some extra features are complemented while SQLite features a new transaction control mechanism using a write-ahead log.
openSUSE 11.4 comes with all the major development languages, platforms and associated IDEs. Qt 4.7.1 and QtCreator 2.1 bring a better and faster WebKit and support for the QML Declarative language, also supported in the KDE Development Platform 4.6 which in turn introduces a ‘Mobile Build Target’ for a thinner version of its libraries. The GNOME 2.32 platform brings Vala and Python support to Anjuta and Glib 2.26 supports Gsettings. 11.4 ships with GTK+ 3 bringing improved device input handling, fully Cairo based drawing (with multiple backends) and much easier theming to developers who want to develop for the upcoming GNOME 3 release. For developers who are interested in working on LibreOffice, openSUSE offers the unique advantage of using a ‘split build’, making it easy to get involved.

Additionally to the distribution the openSUSE project also provides a variety of tools, projects and services to its fellow Free and Open Source community members and its users. Supporting 11.4 are Tumbleweed, a rolling release repository, the Build Service to easily create and release open source software and 11.4 inside susestudio for you to experiment with.

For this release we are particularly pleased to introduce Tumbleweed, a rolling release repository containing the latest stable versions of projects instead of relying on a rigid, periodic release cycle. Amazing openSUSE 11.4 : Ερχεται με τον νεο βελτιώμένο πυρίνα 2.6.37

Σε 2 μέρες φτάνει η νέα πολύ-αναμενόμενη έκδοση του openSUSE. Η 11.4 έρχεται για να δείξει ακόμη μια φορά πως είναι να είσαι μια σταθερή και συνάμα στην αιχμή της τεχνολογίας διανομή.

Έρχεται 'φορώντας' κάτω από το 'καπό' της τον νέο πυρήνα 2.6.37. Όπως έχω γράψει παλαιότερα η σχέση αυτού του πυρίνα με το openSUSE Project έχει ιστορία.

Ο πυρήνας 2.6.37 φέρνει μαζί του μια σειρά από σημαντικές αλλαγές στην επεκτασιμότητα της διαχείρισης της εικονικής μνήμης,οι οποίες βοηθάνε το σύστημα να αποδίδει καλύτερα ακόμα και όταν αυτό κάνει βαριά χρήση του σκληρού δίσκου, πράγμα που συμβαίνει αντιγράφοντας πολλά και βαριά αρχεία ταυτόχρονα.
Επίσης εξασφαλίζει στο openSUSE καλύτερο διαχωρισμό ανάμεσα στις βαριές δουλειές του διαχειριστή, όπως είναι π.χ. η αναβάθμιση του συστήματος η ακόμη και το χτίσιμο πακέτων, με αποτέλεσμα αυτές να μην επηρεάζουν την καθημερινότητα του χρήστη και να μπορεί ταυτόχρονα να δει τα μέηλ του και να σερφάρει στο διαδίκτυο χωρίς να αντιμετωπίζει τα προβλήματα που είχε μέχρι τώρα κάθε φορά που λ.χ. έκανε μια αναβάθμιση...

Επίσης όπως είναι αναμενόμενο ο νέος πυρήνας έρχεται να δώσει στο openSUSE 11.4 ακόμα καλύτερη υποστήριξη στο υποστηριζόμενο υλικό (hardware) συμπεριλαμβανομένων και πολλών ανοιχτών Broadcom ασυρμάτων καρτών, κάνοντας τους περισσότερους φορητούς υπολογιστές της αγοράς να μπορούν να δουλέψουν απροβλημάτιστα.
Ένα ακόμη αξιοσημείωτο χαρακτηριστικό είναι ότι έρχεται με νέους αλλά και βελτιωμένους οδηγούς open Radeon και Nouveau, οι οποίοι υποστηρίζουν τις κάρτες γραφικών AMD/ATI και NVIDIA στο Xorg 1.9, Mesa 7.9 και τον πυρήνα. Αυτοί οι οδηγοί δεν παρέχουν μόνο καλά 2D γραφικά αλλά και αξιοπρεπή 3D γραφικά. Ειδικά το τελευταίο Mesa έρχεται με έναν νέο shader compiler που δουλεύει καλύτερα με τα νέα τσιπάκια Radeon βελτιώνοντας έτσι την απόδοση αλλά και την κανονική υποστήριξη.

Το openSUSE 11.4 έρχεται και αλλάζει πολλά δεδομένα.

Το ότι θα συναντούσα σπουδαίους ανθρώπους της κοινότητας openSUSE το ήξερα πριν έρθω στο Los Angeles, το ότι θα περνούσα όμως τοοοοοόσο καλά με αυτούς δεν το περίμενα με τίποτα. Προσπαθώ να κρατήσω το κεφάλι μου σε ένα κομμάτι αλλά δεν νομίζω ότι θα τα καταφέρω μέχρι το τέλος. Είναι απίστευτη η ροή της κυκλοφορίας που υπάρχει τριγύρω και πως όλο αυτό συνδυάζετε με απίστευτο χαβαλέ. Πραγματικά πίστευα πως θα ερχόμουν εδώ και μετά από κάθε μέρα θα μπλόγκαρα και αλλά τέτοια, αλλά δεν θυσιάζεις λεπτό από την κουβέντα με αυτούς του φανταστικούς ανθρώπους για να κάνεις οτιδήποτε, πόσο μάλλον να κάνεις κάτι το οποίο μπορείς να κάνεις και αφού γυρίσεις πίσω.

LA σε λέει (openSUSE Marketing Hackfest)

Είμαι τόσο ενθουσιασμένος και δεν μπορώ να το κρύψω a.k.a I'm so excited and I just can't hide it που λέει και το Disco-άσμα. Σε μερικές ώρες πετάω για Ρώμη και από εκεί για Λος Άντζελες όπου και πάω για να παραστώ στο Marketing Hackfest όπου και είμαι καλεσμένος για δουλέψω μαζί με την υπόλοιπη ομάδα marketing της κοινότητας openSUSE για την προώθηση της έκδοσης 11.4 που κυκλοφορεί σε μερικές μέρες και όχι μόνο.

Αυτή η συνάντηση είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική για την κοινότητα openSUSE μιας και είναι το πρώτο Marketing Hackfest που διοργανώνετε και μάλιστα γίνετε ακόμα σημαντικότερη δεδομένου ότι βρισκόμαστε μια ανάσα πριν την δημιουργία του openSUSE Foundation. Σχεδόν όλες οι σημαντικές προσωπικότητες της κοινότητας θα βρίσκονται εκεί, αρχής γενόμενης της παρουσίας και συμμετοχής του Άλαν Κλάρκ, προέδρου του Δ.Σ του openSUSE.

Ένας από τους λόγους που είμαι τόσο ενθουσιασμένος είναι ότι όπως όλα δείχνουν θα μάθω πάρα πολλά πράγματα γύρο από πάρα πολλά πράγματα. Επίσης θα γνωρίσω επιτέλους όλους αυτούς τους ανθρώπους με τους οποίους μιλάω και δουλεύω καθημερινά.

Jules Verne - The Author who taught me to think out of the box

Since I was a kid I was a 'difficult' boy. I was too energetic and naughty but one of the few things that could keep me quiet was reading. A teacher recognized that and suggested my parents to buy me books all the time and just leave them in my room. Since the age of ten I started reading at least one book a week and so far I don't remember myself reading less than one book a month and until the age of sixteen I never asked from my parents any other present than books.
I have many favorite authors but if I could pick my three favorite I would pick four:

Jules Verne
Graham Masterton
Edgar Allan Poe
H.P. Lovecraft

Today is the birth anniversary of my first favorite author ever. Jules Verne was an inspiration for many people and among them,me. I spent countless nights imagine myself as a crew of Nautilus at 'Twenty thousand leagues under the sea' and as the sixth member(seventh if we count Captain's Nemo appearance) of Cyrus Smith's at 'The mysterious island' party . The influence I got from his books was deeply and that influence is responsible for a great percentage of the way of thinking I have. It is also responsible for the countless trust I have in human nature and the power of will. His books taught me that imagination has no boundaries and many times thinking outside the box is a way of evolving as a person. It also taught me to respect different people and the various ways of thinking, made me to realize that sometimes what is good and bad depends many times from the position I am standing. It taught me so many thinks I could probably write a book about them. I certainly wrote countless essays about it through my school years and writing great essays is another thing Jules Verne's books taught me...
The best way to end this subject I guess is to thank that teacher back in fourth grade of elementary school and of course my parents whom although they denied me many things in my childhood they never denied me books. Imagination to a kid is as important as food and as the quality of the food we serve our kids affects their growth so the quality of imagination affects their mental growth. Don't serve your kids fast food and hours in front of a TV if you really love them just because that is easier, it will get back to you one day...

Having a distribution that gives you a two year support for ALL editions is another fascinating aspect of the openSUSE distribution. Being in a community that allows you to say that you think that this is not enough and that you want to do something with it is another one. Wolfgang Rosenauer believed that something like that would be useful to users and gave birth to Project Evergreen.

Hi Wolfgang, I have some questions about the Evergreen Project that I got from a few people I talked about it. Let us start...
1)Tell us some things about the Evergreen Project. What inspired your idea for the project?

-Basically since I began to use Linux (long ago) I installed and openSUSE (previously S.u.S.E. Linux) for friends as desktops and servers including people who do not know anything about Linux. Also I'm running several servers in hosted environments for some association and myself. As I would call myself an openSUSE poweruser (in the past employed by SUSE Linux/Novell) I didn't and still don't want to switch to another longer supported distribution like CentOS, Debian, or Ubuntu LTS. I tried some and wasn't satisfied with them. Also using SLES is no option as there is no money involved at all.
I don't want to care about all the machines every day (you know it's nothing I get money for) but after 18 months at the latest the systems run out of security maintenance which is a very bad thing for machines running in the internet as web-/mail/etc servers. Because of that I always followed discussions about initiatives like openSUSE LTS and a CentOS-like clone of SLES. Unfortunately there were endless discussions about details instead of something happening and so I decided to try another approach: "Start it first and figure out details along the way". All that with the risk of the project failing at some point.

2)What is the usefulness of the Evergreen Project in everyday use? What I mean is how a regular-everyday user could find Evergreen project useful?

-Currently the project started to support 11.1. So it's useful for everyone still running 11.1 somewhere. It allows them to get security (and in some cases) bugfixes for their system.
That being said project Evergreen should not prevent people fromupdating their systems but it gives those who cannot do it for different reasons the chance to have a secure platform for a longer time.

To be is to do,to do has to be fun...

These days the Greek openSUSE community took over most of my time since some of the hard working members are University students and it is examination season here in Greece and so I had to give them less or no work at all and someone should replace them so that no community work will fall back. For this week we made it and we still hold on as planned. We just released the Greek edition of Weekly news. Unfortunately I feel I left back a bit my work at the marketing team but I will catch up ;-) .
...But on the other hand this week I had the opportunity to start writing a Greek article about Project Evergreen that got my attention and I had some ideas about we can promote it. I got in touch with Wolfgang Rosenauer about it so that I can take his personal opinion and some directions about it and with Stratos Zolotas from the Greek Community that makes some bug-testing in 2 desktops and a server for the Evergreen project. It is a really interesting project and is another thing that shows the free will of the people in the openSUSE community to create and develop their own community projects. That last goes to those who believe that the openSUSE community is a corporate slave...

Power to the people

The ballots are open and now the power is in the hands of people of openSUSE to decide whom they want to have on the board for the next year. The openSUSE community is a true democratic community so the elections procedure for it, is a celebration of ideas. All the candidates have proved our love for what we do and we are all devoted to the openSUSE project and its community. If I was not a candidate I would really had a huge problem deciding whom to vote. The only 'leverage' I can provide myself is to tell you that just in case you want to know more things about me and you can spare 5 minutes, please visit my profile and my election platform. Ημέρες συνεργασίας openSUSE

Πριν λίγο καιρό συζητούσαμε στο κανάλι #opensuse-marketing να διοργανώσουμε ήμερες συνεργασίας της κοινότητας. Σκεφτήκαμε ότι θα ήταν καλή ιδέα έτσι ώστε να τελειώσουμε διάφορες δουλειές γύρω από την προώθηση και την οργάνωση της κοινότητας και να ακούσουμε από την κοινότητα τις προτάσεις και τις ιδέες τους.

Αποφασίσαμε λοιπόν ότι θα το κάναμε ως εξής:
Θα στηνόμασταν 2 άτομα την φορά μέσα στο κανάλι του IRC και με μια ατζέντα που θα φτιάχναμε νωρίτερα σε ένα etherpad η οποία όμως δεν περιόριζε κάποιον να προτείνει πράγματα. Κάθε Ημέρα Συνεργασίας θα διαρκούσε 16 ώρες έτσι ώστε να μπορέσουν να συμμετάσχουν όλοι, άσχετα από ποιο μέρος του πλανήτη ήταν.
Χωρίσαμε λοιπόν τις θεματικές ενότητες σε 3 μέρη:

και αρχίσαμε την δουλειά.
Η πρώτη μέρα ανατέθηκε σε εμένα και τον Carlos Ribeiro από την Βραζιλία. Μιας και ήταν η πρώτη φορά που γινόταν κάτι τέτοιο δεν είχαμε ακριβής οδηγίες για το πώς θα το οδηγούσαμε όλο αυτό και ουσιαστικά οι διοργανωτές για τις επόμενες μέρες περίμεναν να μάθουν από τα 'λάθη' μας ή μάλλον από τα πάθη μας.

If Operating Systems Ran The Airlines

UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again. Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.

Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the Seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

2011 Finally came, I wish you all a healthy overall year although this new years dawn found me ill with a cold and fever, as a result of recklessly insisting on riding a motorcycle at -2 C. From the start I sense that this year will be a hard working one. 3 days ago I opened my eyes from fever and I found last years jobs awaiting. I lost the deadline I gave to my self for releasing the openSUSE Weekly news. I didn't shared the articles for translation to the people and I had left my candidacy for the board without a candidate amongst other things that I had to do. I was in panic for about 2 seconds, I confess that no matter what I do I hate not completing the jobs I took over. Two seconds later I tried to concentrate, I chilled out and let things role. Thank God I have good people around me helping me, so I finished all the works around the Greek community, I even found the time to organize some new things like a very interesting event that we will announce in the next few days.
Other than that I made some work with my candidacy, I prepared my Board election platform and started make some planning for my campaign. I still have lots of hard work to do. The other candidates are really interesting people and all of them have contributed a lot to the project. It is going to be a hard race and this is good because it will be interesting to the end. I believe that no matter the results, openSUSE community will be the final winner.

When I became an openSUSE ambassador a few months back I wanted to make a difference. I believed that openSUSE had not the right place in the Greek FOSS community and was undermined by the lack of a Greek community to support it. I believed in it and with the help of all people that are involved one way or another to the Greek openSUSE Community, proof is obvious now.
Being part of a community was. from the early years of humanity. really important for people and co-operation showed them how to achieve great targets that it would be impossible to achieve as an individual person.I see the Greek openSUSE community getting larger and stronger each day like a newborn. I see people care for other people to get a good quality software and share the philosophy of FOSS, share the philosophy of sharing.
Sharing is really undermined at our days and it mustn't because love starts with it and love with no exchange is the material that can really make the difference to the world. I want to thank the openSUSE community for all the love and the sharing and I wish you all Merry Christmas. I wish you all to be healthy and capable to continue changing the world to a better place.

1ο OpenFest Open Christmas στην Φλώρινα

Κάτι πολύ ενδιαφέρον όσων αφορά το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ έχει οργανωθεί για ανήμερα των Χριστουγέννων από τον Σύλλογο Εκπαιδευτικών Πληροφορικης Π.Ε. Φλώρινας. Έτσι λοιπόν Στην κεντρική πλατεία της Φλώρινας Στις 24 του μήνα, σε ένα από τα ξύλινα σπιτάκια που έχουν στηθεί εκεί με αφορμή τις γιορτές, θα μαζευτούμε φίλοι του ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ και θα προσπαθήσουμε να δείξουμε στον κόσμο τα προτερήματα του ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ.

Όσοι λοιπόν ενδιαφέρεστε να μάθετε παραπάνω για το ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ και να γνωρίσετε την κοινότητα περάστε μια βόλτα. Πιστεύω ότι προσπάθειες σαν και αυτή σε ακριτικές πόλεις όπως η Φλώρινα έχουν τεράστια σημασία και σπουδαιότητα και πρέπει να στηρίζονται από όλους.

Ξέρω για σίγουρα οτι στην Εκδήλωση θα συμμετέχει ο KLUG και φυσικά η Ελληνική κοινότητα του openSUSE όπου όπως όλα δείχνουν θα ανεβάσουμε μια μικρή ομάδα, οποιοσδήποτε άλλος από κάποια κοινότητα ενδιαφέρετε να συμμετάσχει η να στείλει υλικό για την εκδήλωση μπορεί να επικοινωνήσει με τους διοργανωτές μέσω του μέηλ kiolalis@gmail.com.

Me and Stathis(diamond_gr)

Yesterday once again I felt very proud about the work I have done so far with Stathis (diamond_gr) in the formation of the Greek community from Scratch. We were having that event at a school for xariseto.gr where people were giving away stuff they no longer used for free to other people and we were there to inform people about FOSS. The last time I went to such an event I was alone and I had difficulties on talking to everybody since there were a lot of people that were really got interesting in openSUSE. This time Stathis would come with me and we asked other people to come to help if they could. The response was immediate from 2 members that came and helped us for more than 7 hours.

When we people started coming asking questions I felt very proud about those people. The reason was the passion that people show about serving the Greek openSUSE community, three months ago we were 2 people trying to make a stand and now we have a bunch of very skilled people making all short of things for openSUSE community.
The Greek openSUSE community seem to bloom and it is great to know that you have a great part. Yesterday we showed our superiority since we went to the event like a team,we worked as a team and we managed to do all the right things a community should do. Older communities from openSUSE community were present but not even close to our level of organization. And although the great amount of work we made, still we had a lot of fun.

My openSUSE Candidacy and the how I see contribution in FOSS

Yesterday I finally made the big step, I decided to run for member of the board. There are many reasons for that decision I made and I'll try to analyze some of them as I analyze my thoughts and myself to you through my blog in the next days. I am going to try to give you to understand from what I am made of, so that if you decide to support me to be sure that you are doing it for the right reasons. Today I will try to give you to understand why I really enjoy the work I am doing for the openSUSE community,by giving you my background history of my decision to contribute in FOSS generally and what I believe about the way contribution should be done.

Contributing is a very noble thing and I think myself as a noble man. Putting the need to share and give before the need to take certainly makes me feeling better. I discovered that some years ago at my day-job and I became 'addicted' to it. A few years later by accident I discovered FOSS. Although when I started I was a bit disappointed because people I knew back then made me think that in order to contribute in FOSS you should be a programmer. So I started making tries to learn a bit of programing myself, I am telling you that it was a great failure. I never really gave up trying until today to learn programming but back then I was a bit disappointed because I had no real help from no one at that time. At that time my way to contribute was helping at various translations and planning events like the R.M. Stallman speech and host for GREEKLUG.
And then in Greek FOSSCOMM 2010, were I was with some friends from my Lug, I attended a speech of a Debian ambassador were he spoke about who could become an ambassador, saying that programming was not a demand about it, there I said to my self that this was the way to contribute to a community. At that time becoming an ambassador was not an option since we had a lot of work and planning for RMS's speech so I left that aside.
The four days I spend with Richard Stallman was an experience I could really write a book about it. He showed me the greatness of simplicity. He also gave me to understand that planning is good but there is a time that we must stop planning and act. A not so perfect something is better than an imaginary perfect nothing. Please don't get me wrong, I don't mean no thinking just acting, that is unacceptable for me, but only thinking and talking and thinking and talking without finally making something because you haven't found the perfect solution I believe is stupid. Anyway when you are in a community there are so many versions of perfect as the people inside the community. My experience of interaction in communities is really big, but about that you can read it in a next article. I believe you got a clue about me and what is on my head. I really hope you liked what you read and that finally I will get your support.

openSUSE: A difficult Distribution or a user-friendly distribution? (Part 1).

Finally what kind of distribution is openSUSE? Is it a distribution that demands from the user to have some basic knowledge around Linux? is it a distribution unmanageable or by now its development has reached that level that has become a stable but yet friendly to the user of every level? Finally is openSUSE a distribution that you would recommend to a user that starts now with FOSS?
The easy way to write that article is to present you the advantages of the distribution noting for you that openSUSE is really the easiest distribution on the world.But something like that would not be interesting for no one and I believe neither it would convince anyone. Another way would be to emphasize the disadvantages of the other distributions but I find that immoral and again I wouldn't convince anyone.Of course at some point I'll have to make some comparison with other distributions but that will only serve my intention to define the position where openSUSE stands and under no circumstances I have no intention to undermine any distribution because that would undermined the work of other people like me who make a try to support FOSS and FOSS is above all.

As we start lets try to define what user-friendly is. At that point let me tell you that my personal opinion is that user-friendly really cannot be defined exactly since every user is a different person and has a certain, different way of thinking than all the others so there are different interpretations about it and none is really mistaken or right.
The interpretation we get from dictionary.com explains:
-easy to use, operate, understand
At Webopedia we find a slightly different interpretation for the same thing explaining to us that:
-Refers to anything that makes it easier for novices to use a computer. Menu-driven programs, for example, are considered more user-friendly than command-driven systems. Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are also considered user-friendly. Online help systems are another feature of user-friendly programs.
Although the term user-friendly represents an important concept, it has been so overused that it has become something of a cliche.

So accepting the point of view where refers to anything that makes it easier for novices to use a computer and the Menu-driven programs are considered more user-friendly than command-driven systems. And also the fact that graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are also considered user-friendly we go to the Linux Management Tools. OpenSUSE uses as a Management Tool YaST. YaST is that tool that you can do almost anything in your system. From adding a user, install software and add a repository until to 'play' with the kernel modules of your system. What makes YaST friendlier to the user than all the other management tools available for the other distribution is that the user has less complicated menus and the user gets into even fewer menus than other popular distributions so he/she stays focused on what he/she really wants to do with the system. Also the design of YaST is also a strong point since its designed that way that you will find exactly what you are looking for in the less possible time, let's be honest, we all want to finish the set up as fast as we can so that we can focus at our real work and no one wants to get lost at menus and sub-menus.

Another big advantage of openSUSE against the other distribution is the usability and user friendliness of the choice of GUI. If you ask an old Linux user about openSUSE he will tell you that openSUSE is a distribution that is closely intertwined with the KDE GUI. Of cource as all other great distributions gives you the privilege of choice among KDE, GNOME, XFCE, LXDE and other popular GUI's. Though from version 11.2 and later, the default GUI is KDE, unlike other distributions who have different GUI options but support properly only that GUI which comes as a default with the distribution, openSUSE distribution provides equal support and to the GNOME GUI. Both desktop environments are mature and feature-rich so that the user can choose what it believes to be appropriate for him. Also there is a try to do the same and to other popular GUI's.

I think that I must end that first part of my search for what kind of distribution openSUSE is right here. I hope that I gave you some useful information and of course I hope I convinced some of you to give openSUSE a try at your Desktop/Laptop, if not I hope to make it in the next part(s).

Organize a booth for openSUSE at an event

To be honest with you I just wrote that article for the openSUSE wiki but I liked it so much that I decided to blog it.

Well it's time to go and organize your booth.You did it all correctly so far:

You announced the event on the mailing lists.
You registered a booth.
You got the promotional material you asked.
You got all the items of the checklist bellow.
You even found other people to participate with you in the booth.

...And now what?
You are at your booth that made so many efforts to get and all you see is three empty walls and a table,or even worst only a dirty table,now what?

Don't let that or anything else get you down,remember you are the Boss now.
First of all and before you put out the promo material or anything else you have with you for the decoration of the booth,make sure the the booth is clean,if its not,clean it. A clean booth is of great importance.After that, think of the decoration of the booth first and then get your things out and put them in the place you thought,if you don't have a clue of how to decorate a booth and you are a bit nervous about it then relax and do the same procedure backwards. Put out your things and the promo material and just throw your things around and make the changes you want.Always listen to others on that,but listen does not mean follow so if you don't agree with something you were told just do it your way,remember you are in control.Use your creativity and try not to be nervous,all other things will come natural.

Now it's time for the event to start,you made all of the above and now you have to decide were to put your people (or your self if you are alone) to stand.The standard place you (all) can take is in front of your stuff. although some times this is not the best,once again do how you feel more comfortable and more correctly to you for the best result. If you are in a big event and you have more than 2 people assist you,better to give to one of your team member the role of refill the promo material and help the others to whatever they want. It may sounds a bit underestimating that there will be one serving the others but in a major event this role is critical for the success of the booth,remember a team is like a machine and even the smallest screw can prevent it from working.

The event started,people are passing by and they are getting interesting and ask a lot of things,all is great but you cannot manage to talk to everyone,don't get nervous about it,anyone who really wants to take information will wait.If you get nervous you might become rude to the one you are currently talking or you might not give the right information and prevent people use openSUSE with that. Remember, try not to become nervous and that it is possible not to be able to talk to all so if you cannot avoid it,its ok.Everybody knows that you are doing the best you can.

Last but not least,the checklist of items to take with you above the promotional material,just in case.In an ideal world you won't need any of that:

Knife
Clean up products
Paper towels

Πρελούδιο

To πρελούδιο είναι μουσικό κομμάτι σχεδιασμένο να παιχθεί ως εισαγωγή πριν από μια σύνθεση, συνήθως μια Φούγκα ή Σουίτα. Στην πρωταρχική του μορφή, το πρελούδιο λειτουργούσε περισσότερο ως άσκηση των μουσικών πριν την εκτέλεση του κυρίως έργου, καθώς και για το κούρδισμα και τη σταθεροποίηση των οργάνων. Για το λόγο αυτό είναι σύνθεση ελεύθερη στη δομή και περισσότερο αυτοσχεδιαστικού χαρακτήρα. Κατά την περίοδο του ρομαντισμού, το πρελούδιο αποτελεί πολλές φορές αυτόνομο μουσικό κομμάτι, όπως για παράδειγμα σε συνθέσεις του Σοπέν ή του Φραντς Λιστ.
Η ονομασία πρελούδιο χρησιμοποιείται, επίσης, για εισαγωγές Όπερας.

Καλημέρα
Σήμερα διαπίστωσα οτι έχω αρκετό καιρό να γράψω κάτι ολότελα δικό μου σε τούτο εδώ το μπλογκ και αναρωτήθηκα, ποίος ο λόγος να κρατάς ένα μπλογκ εάν δεν γράφεις τις σκέψεις σου σε αυτό;
-Κανένας,απάντησα γρήγορα στον εαυτό μου.

Αυτό που μου αρέσει όταν γράφω ένα κείμενο εδώ μέσα είναι ότι το κάνω χωρίς να έχω κάνει προσχέδιο αυτών που γράφω,βλέπω μόνο μια άδεια οθόνη και την γεμίζω με ότι λέξεις ξεπεταχτούν από τα συναισθήματα και την διάθεση που έχω την στιγμή που γράφω,σχολιάζοντας ότι μου έρθει στο κεφάλι. Αυτός άλλωστε είναι και ο μόνος όρος που έβαλα στον εαυτό μου έτσι ώστε να κρατήσω αυτό το μπλογκ. Στην προηγούμενη μορφή του, ξέφυγα από αυτό και δεν ήταν όμορφο.

Εδώ και καιρό ασχολούμαι με το openSUSE Project προσπαθώντας να δημιουργήσω, όχι μόνος μου φυσικά, μια κοινότητα η οποία λείπει από την Ελλάδα. Όλη αυτή η διαδικασία είναι αρκετά δημιουργική αλλά συνάμα και κουραστική αλλά με την καλή έννοια. Είναι πολύ όμορφο να συμμετέχεις σε μια κοινότητα, να προσφέρεις, να δημιουργείς και να μοιράζεσαι, ειδικά να μοιράζεσαι...

Όχι δεν ανακάλυψα τώρα τον Ήλιο αλλά η διαπίστωση του πόσο όμορφα είναι όλα αυτά σου προσφέρει από μόνη της μεγάλη ικανοποίηση, σαν να βγαζεις το αγαπημενο σου παιχνιδι από την ντουλάπα μετά από καιρό και να παίζεις μαζί του η σαν να κάνεις έρωτα με μια παλιά ερωμένη που αγάπησες.Έξω έχει συννεφιά,είναι ακόμη πρωί και εγώ έχω ρομαντική διάθεση, ακόμα κάτι που έχει να γίνει καιρό. Πάλι ξέφυγα, ω τι έκπληξη;

Έλεγα λοιπόν για την δημιουργία της κοινότητας, όμορφο πράγμα η δημιουργία και ακόμα πιο όμορφο να συνεργάζεσαι σε αυτό με ανθρώπους που συμμερίζονται τις ιδέες σου και εσύ τις δικές τους. Καλό πράγμα και η αλληλεπίδραση και η γέννηση ιδεών από αυτή. Καλό πράγμα και σχεδόν μεθυστικό και η εξέλιξη που έρχεται από αυτή την διαδικασία, παράπλευρη απώλεια ίσως η υπεροψία που αναβλύζει από μέσα μας όταν παρατηρούμε την εξέλιξη μας που στο τέλος καλούμαστε να ελέγξουμε αλλιώς ίσως γρήγορα,ίσως μακροπρόθεσμα θα μας πάει πιο πίσω από εκεί που ξεκινήσαμε αφήνοντας μας την πικρή γεύση της αποτυχίας. Εδώ θα πω όμως ότι ένα από τα πιο σπουδαία πράγματα που με δίδαξε η ζωή (με σκληρό τρόπο) είναι ότι η αποτυχία είναι πολύ υποτιμημένη. Ένα άλλο σχετικό είναι η σπουδαιότητα του να ξέρεις πότε έχεις αποτύχει, πότε έχεις πετύχει και πότε κατευθύνεσαι προς ένα από αυτά τα δυο αλλά δεν έχεις φτάσει ακόμα εκεί.

Ξαναγυρνάω στην κοινότητα λοιπόν αυτή την φορά για τα αρνητικά της διαδικασίας. Τα αρνητικά της διαδικασίας λοιπόν βασίζονται στους ίδιους παράγοντες πάνω κάτω με τα θετικά με κύριο παράγοντα τους ανθρώπους. Κυρίως στις προσδοκίες που έχεις από αυτούς,σε αυτόν τον τομέα ο μόνος υπαίτιος για οτιδήποτε είμαι εγώ, παρόλα αυτά δικό μου είναι το μπλογκ και αν δεν γκρινιάξω εδώ που θα το κάνω; Το να μην απογοητεύεσαι γρήγορα από τους ανθρώπους είναι τις πιο πολλές φορές ελάττωμα, όποιος υποστηρίζει το αντίθετο θα ήθελα να κάνω μια συζήτηση μαζί του... Ξέρω ότι το να λες ότι βλέπεις μπροστά είναι πολύ υπεροπτικό, ειδικά αν αναφέρεσαι στο μέλλον άλλων ανθρώπων πέραν του εαυτού σου, αλλά είναι κάτι που το κάνω και χωρίς φόβο αλλά με μπόλικο πάθος το υποστηρίζω μιας και σπάνια κάνω λάθος. Από την άλλη πάντα κάνω λάθος σε αυτόν τον τομέα όταν μιλάω και πράττω για τον εαυτό μου. Με ένα περίεργο προσωπικό εγκεφαλικό αλγόριθμο που σχετικά πρόσφατα ανακάλυψα ότι υπάρχει, ο μόνος τρόπος να πετύχω κάτι για μένα είναι να κάνω τα πάντα για να απομακρυνθώ από αυτό,το έπραξα μια-δυο φορές και για έναν(περίεργο) λόγο δουλεύει. Πάλι ξέφυγα, για τα καλά αυτή τη φορά. Συνεχίζοντας από εκεί που έμεινα (;!;) και συνοψίζοντας αυτά που θέλω να πω γιατί νιώθω ότι βαρέθηκα, θα πω ότι το μεγαλύτερο αρνητικό είναι ότι οι άνθρωποι καμιά φορά τεμπελιάζουν η βάζουν το προσωπικό όφελος πάνω από το συλλογικό και όταν αυτό γίνετε και εμποδίζει την εξέλιξη της κοινότητας, είναι ιδιαίτερα ψυχοφθόρο για το σύνολο της κοινότητας. Στον τόπο αυτό είναι αυτονόητο να κοιτάζουμε την πάρτη μας, αλλά αυτό που κυριαρχεί δεν είναι πάντα το σωστό, είναι απλά αυτό που κυριαρχεί. Επίσης αποδεικνύεται τα τελευταία χρόνια ότι αυτό που κυριαρχεί δεν είναι πάντα προϊόν το οποίο θα μας εξελίξει, ο νοών νοείτο.

Τέλος με τις μη-ελεύθερες διαφημίσεις: εξαφανίστε τις!

Ένας μήνας, μια εκστρατεία, ένας στόχος: να ξεφορτωθούμε τις διαφημιστικές καταχωρίσεις μη-ελεύθερου λογισμικού από τους δημόσιους δικτυακούς τόπους. Μέσα σε τέσσερις εβδομάδες, το FSFE έλαβε αναφορές για 2162 Ευρωπαϊκούς φορείς που διαφημίζουν μη-ελεύθερα προγράμματα PDFreaders. Εκτός από τους 305 ακτιβιστές, οι οποίοι συμμετείχαν στην αναζήτηση, 1500 άτομα, 46 επιχειρήσεις και 38 οργανισμοί υπόγραψαν στη Συλλογή Υπογραφών για την Αφαίρεση Καταχωρίσεων Ιδιοκτησιακού Λογισμικού από Ιστοτόπους του Δημοσίου. Τώρα που το κυνήγι τελείωσε, είναι η ώρα της καταδίωξης εκείνων των δικτυακών τόπων που ενθαρρύνουν τους επισκέπτες να θέτουν σε κίνδυνο την ελευθερία τους. Είναι ώρα να εξαφανίσουμε αυτές τις διαφημίσεις!
Άτομα με εθελοντισμό υψηλών κινήτρων αναζήτησαν στο διαδίκτυο ιστοχώρους του δημοσίου οι οποίοι διαφημίζουν μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό και έκαναν αναφορά για 2162 φορείς. Κάποιοι από τους εθελοντές, όπως οι Massimo Barbieri και Lucas Bickel ατομικά ανάφεραν περισσότερους από 350! Οι Alessandro Albini, Rainer Schmitz, και Pavel Kharitonov επίσης είχαν αξιοσημείωτη συμβολή αναφέροντας 50 φορείς ο καθένας.
Αλλά το FSFE δεν θα σταματήσει στη λίστα με τους φορείς. Στις επόμενες εβδομάδες, το FSFE θα στείλει επιστολές στους φορείς για να εφιστήσει την προσοχή τους στην αθέμιτη διαφήμιση που προβάλλουν. Εκ μέρους όσων υπογράφουν το κείμενο με τη συλλογή υπογραφών, το FSFE θα ζητήσει από τους φορείς ή να αφαιρέσουν οποιαδήποτε σύσταση για μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό από τον δικτυακό τους τόπο ή να προσφέρουν επιλογή από διάφορα προγράμματα.
Όπου και αν είστε, ό,τι ώρα και αν είναι εκεί που είστε, μπορείτε να συμβάλλετε στην αφαίρεση των διαφημιστικών καταχωρίσεων μη-ελεύθερου λογισμικού από τους δικτυακούς τόπους του δημοσίου. Προγραμματιστής του VLC παίρνει θέση εναντίον της εκτέλεσης του DRM στο App Store της Apple

Ο Rémi Denis-Courmont είναι ένας από τους πρωταρχικούς προγραμματιστές του VLC media player, το οποίο είναι ελεύθερο λογισμικό και διανέμεται υπό την GPL. Νωρίτερα αυτή την εβδομάδα, έγραψε στην Apple να παραπονεθεί ότι η εργασία του διανέμονταν μέσω του App Store τους, υπό όρους οι οποίοι αντιβαίνουν τους όρους της GPL και απαγορεύουν τους χρήστες να μοιράζονται το πρόγραμμα.

Εξηγώντας στην ανακοίνωση του:
Το VLC media player είναι δωρεάν λογισμικό που διαθέτει άδεια μόνο υπό τους όρους της ... GNU General Public License (γνωστός και ως GPL). Αυτοί οι όροι αντικρούονται από τους κανόνες χρήσης των προϊόντων του AppStore, μέσω των οποίων η Apple προσφέρει εφαρμογές για τους χρήστες των κινητών συσκευών της.

Έχουμε γράψει πριν για τους Κανόνες Χρήσης από νομικής απόψεως του App Store, και πώς έρχονται σε σύγκρουση με την GNU GPL και AGPL. Αυτό συμβαίνει γιατί περάσαμε μια παρόμοια δράση επιβολής της νομοθεσίας κατά της Apple, όταν μάθαμε ότι σε λιμένα του GNU Go (τα οποία είναι κατοχυρωμένα από το FSF) ήταν που διανέμονται μέσω του App Store. Δυστυχώς, η Apple επέλεξε να θέσει το ζήτημα να πάει μακριά από την απλή αφαίρεση του λογισμικού από το App Store. Ο Rémi αναμένει ότι η Apple θα κάνει το ίδιο για το συγκεκριμένο port του VLC. Λέει ότι αν το κάνουν, "οι χρήστες των συσκευών που βασίζονται σε IOS [θα] να στερηθούν VLC media player, ως συνέπεια του αδιάλλακτα αυστηρού ελέγχου που διατηρεί η Apple πάνω στην πλατφόρμα εφαρμογών των κινητών."

Είναι πολύ σωστός οσων αφορα την πηγή του προβλήματος. Η άδεια GPL δίνει στην Apple την άδεια να διανέμει αυτό το λογισμικό μέσω του App Store. Το μόνο που θα πρέπει να κάνουν είναι να ακολουθήσουν τους όρους της άδειας για να βοηθήσουν να κρατηθεί το λογισμικό ελεύθερο. Αντ 'αυτού, η Apple έχει αποφασίσει ότι προτιμάει να επιβάλλει την Διαχείριση Ψηφιακών Περιορισμών (DRM) και τους ιδιόκτητους νομικούς ορους για όλα τα προγράμματα στο App Store, και θα προτιμούσαν να πετάξουν εξω λογισμικό με GPL από το να αλλάξουν τους δικούς τους κανόνες. Το πείσμα τους εμποδίζουν εσάς από το να έχετε αυτό το μεγάλο λογισμικό στις συσκευές Apple- όχι την GPL η τους ανθρώπους που την εφαρμόζουν.

Η Apple συνεχίζει να χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερο DRM στα προϊόντα της: μόλις ανακοίνωσε ότι ένα Mac App Store θα είναι σύντομα κοντά σας με φορητούς και επιτραπέζιους υπολογιστές τους και μπορείτε να στοιχηματίσετε ότι θα έχει τους ίδιους δρακόντειους περιορισμούς του σημερινού App Store . Εν τω μεταξύ, άνθρωποι που επιβάλουν την GPL όπως ο Rémi αγωνίζονται εναντίον του DRM, έτσι ώστε ο καθένας να μπορεί να έχει πλήρη έλεγχο των δικών τους υπολογιστων. Είμαστε ευγνώμονες σε αυτόν παίρνει θέση. Αν θέλετε να δείξετε την υποστήριξή σας, επίσης, είναι εύκολο: απλά αποφεύγετε τις μολυσμένες με DRM εφαρμογές απο το App Store της Apple.

Μεταναστέυοντας απο το Fedora σε openSUSE

Πριν από τρεις μέρες ένας πρεσβευτής του openSUSE από την Βραζιλία , ο Alexandre Meirelles de Moura μας ενημέρωσε για μια σειρά άρθρων που έγραψε στο Blog του σχετικά με την μετανάστευσή του από την μια διανομή στην άλλη. Το βρήκα πολύ ενδιαφέρον και ζήτησα απο κάποιον να το μεταφράσει απο τα Πορτογαλικά στα Αγγλικά έτσι έπειτα να το μεταφράσω εγώ στα Ελληνικά. Ο Carlos Ribeiro από την Βραζιλία το έκανε και παρακάτω υπάρχει μια ελεύθερη μετάφραση αυτού στα Ελληνικά που έγινε από εμένα.

Μεταναστέυοντας απο το Fedora σε openSUSE

Έχω αρκετό καιρό τώρα που επανεξετάζω την πρόοδο του openSUSE, άλλα τώρα αποφάσισα να εγκαταστήσω και να χρησιμοποιήσω αυτή την μεγάλη διανομή και να αρχίσω να μεταφέρω την εμπειρία μου σε μια σειρά άρθρων σχετικά με 'μετανάστευση' μου από το Fedora στο openSUSE.

Αρχικά πρέπει να πω ότι μισώ αυτό το μοντέλο ενημέρωσης που εγκρίθηκε από την διανομή στο ότι κατεβάζει και εγκαθιστά κάθε πακέτο.Στις περισσότερες άλλες διανομές, θα κατέβουν πρώτα όλα τα πακέτα και στη συνέχεια θα εγκατασταθούν. Οι κίνδυνοι από τη δημιουργία προβλημάτων στο σύστημα είναι πολύ χαμηλότεροι με αυτόν τον τρόπο. Αλλά υπάρχει ένας απλός τρόπος για να λύσουμε αυτό το πρόβλημα:

Ως root, επεξεργαστείτε το αρχείο /etc/zypp/zypp.conf file

Βρείτε την γραμμή με την τιμή "commit.downloadMode"
Αποσχολιάστε και αλλάξτε την αξία του για "DownloadInAdvance", όπου η γραμμή πρέπει να μοιάζει κάπως έτσι:

commit.downloadMode = DownloadInAdvance

Έτσι, κατά την αναβάθμιση ή την εγκατάσταση πακέτων, πρώτα θα κατεβάσετε όλα τα αρχεία, στη συνέχεια, θα ξεκινήσετε να τα εγκαταστήσετε.

2286 ιστότοποι του δημοσίου διαφημίζουν μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό

Κατά τη διάρκεια της εκστρατείας pdfreaders.org του Ευρωπαϊκού Ιδρύματος Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού, ακτιβιστές του Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού από 41 χώρες ανέφεραν 2286 θεσμικά όργανα του δημοσίου τομέα τα οποία διαφημίζουν μη-ελεύθερα προγράμματα ανάγνωσης αρχείων PDF στους ιστοτόπους τους. Το FSFE τώρα θα έρθει σε επαφή με αυτά τα όργανα, σε μια προσπάθεια να επιτύχει την αφαίρεση όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερων διαφημιστικών καταχωρίσεων για μη-ελεύθερα προγράμματα ανάγνωσης αρχείων PDF πριν από το τέλος του έτους. Η πρόοδος θα τεκμηριωθεί στον κατάλογο με τα αναφερθέντα θεσμικά όργανα.

«Οι δημόσιες υπηρεσίες έχουν το δικαίωμα να προσπαθούν και να διευκολύνουν τα πράγματα εξηγώντας στους πολίτες πώς να ανοίγουν αρχεία των ιστοτόπων. Αλλά διαφημίζοντας μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό, προσφέρουν στους πολίτες κακή υπηρεσία», δηλώνει ο Karsten Gerloff, Πρόεδρος του Ευρωπαϊκού Ιδρύματος Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού. »Οι δημοκρατικές κυβερνήσεις υποτίθεται ότι μας δίνουν ελευθερία, όχι να μας κατευθύνουν σε εξάρτηση από έναν μοναδικό προμηθευτή λογισμικού».

Οι περισσότερες εκδόσεις του τύπου αρχειοθέτησης PDF είναι Ανοικτά Πρότυπα, αλλά τα διαφημιζόμενα προγράμματα ανάγνωσης είναι ιδιοκτησιακά. Αυτές οι καταχωρίσεις βοηθούν στην κατασκευή αναγνωρισιμότητας για μια συγκεκριμένη εταιρία μη-ελεύθερου λογισμικού. Ο δημόσιος τομέας μετατρέπεται σε έναν δίαυλο μάρκετινγκ για αυτήν την εταιρία και τα προϊόντα της και δυσκολεύει τα Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού προγράμματα ανάγνωσης αρχείων PDF να κερδίσουν μερίδιο αγοράς.

«Είμαστε ειλικρινά εντυπωσιασμένοι από τον όγκο της ανταπόκρισης», λέει ο Matthias Kirschner, συντονιστής για την Κοινότητα του FSFE. «Ο αριθμός των αναφορών που έχουμε λάβει δείχνει ότι το πρόβλημα ενδημεί σε όλα τα επίπεδα του δημόσιου τομέα». Σε μόλις τέσσερις εβδομάδες, εκατοντάδες ακτιβιστές από 41 χώρες υπέβαλαν 2286 αναφορές σχετικά με διαφημιστικές καταχωρίσεις για μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό στο FSFE. Εκτός από αυτό, ήδη 37 οργανισμοί, 45 επιχειρήσεις και 1418 άτομα έχουν υπογράψει τη συλλογή υπογραφών του FSFE ζητώντας από τις δημόσιες υπηρεσίες να αφαιρέσουν τις διαφημιστικές καταχωρίσεις για μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό από τους ιστοτόπους τους. «Αυτό δείχνει πόσοι άνθρωποι από όλη την Ευρώπη νοιάζονται για την ελευθερία στο λογισμικό και είναι πρόθυμοι να δραστηριοποιηθούν για να βοηθήσουν τον δημόσιο τομέα να λύσει το πρόβλημα με τις διαφημίσεις», συνεχίζει ο Kirschner.

Το FSFE ενθαρρύνει τα δημόσια θεσμικά όργανα να αφαιρέσουν τις διαφημιστικές καταχωρίσεις για μη-ελεύθερο λογισμικό από τους ιστοτόπους τους ή τουλάχιστο να αλλάξουν τους ιστοτόπους τους έτσι ώστε να μην κάνουν πλέον διακρίσεις ενάντια στο Ελεύθερο Λογισμικό. Τον Φεβρουάριο του 2009 Μέλη του FSFE ξεκίνησαν τον pdfreaders.org, έναν ιστότοπο που περιέχει Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού προγράμματα ανάγνωσης αρχείων PDF για όλα τα κυριότερα λειτουργικά συστήματα. Ο ιστότοπος παρέχει επίσης συστάσεις με βάση ένα εύρος πρακτικών κριτηρίων, όπως η ολοκλήρωση με το λειτουργικό σύστημα και η ευκολία στην εγκατάσταση.

Linux:Το γλωσσαρι (βιβλιο)

Δεν έχω παρουσιάσει εδώ μέσα ξανά βιβλίο αλλά αυτο το βιβλιο πιστευω πως αξιζει τον κοπο.Το αγορασα προχτες και απο οσο εχω διαβασει( 60 σελιδες και κατι) ειναι το καλυτερο βιβλιο που εχω διαβασει στα Ελληνικα για αρχαριους αλλα και για ποιο πεπειραμενους χρήστες.

Εχει πάρα πολλά παραδείγματα και τα λέει αρκετά αναλυτικά,πιστεύω ότι αν υπάρχει χώρος στην βιβλιοθήκη σας είναι απαραίτητο να το κατέχετε. Επίσης αρκετά σημαντικό θα έλεγα ότι είναι το μικρο κόστος που έχει για βιβλίο αυτής της κατηγορίας(παρόλο που είναι pocket εκδοσή),εγώ το πήρα 13,5 ευρώ από βιβλιοπωλείο του κέντρου.Παρόλο που μπορεί να μην σας ενθουσιάσει το ότι είναι σε έκδοση pocket θα καταλάβετε ότι τελικά είναι πολύ πρακτικό μιας και μπορείτε να το παίρνετε εύκολα μαζί σας.

Τελικά τι είναι αυτό που κάνει ένα λογισμικό ελεύθερο;
Το κόστος,σε καμία των περιπτώσεων. Αν ο βασικότερος λόγος που χρησιμοποιήτε Ελεύθερο λογισμικό είναι το κόστος έχετε χάσει το νόημα του ελεύθερου λογισμικού.

Αυτό που κάνει ένα λογισμικό ελεύθερο είναι οι 4 ελευθερίες:

«Ελευθερία 0» είναι η ελευθερία να λειτουργήσεις το πρόγραμμα όπως θέλεις.

«Ελευθερία 1» είναι η ελευθερία να μελετάς τον πηγαίο κώδικα του προγράμματος και να τον αλλάζεις έτσι ώστε το πρόγραμμα να κάνει αυτό που επιθυμείς.

«Ελευθερία 2» είναι η ελευθερία να βοηθάς άλλους ανθρώπους, η ελευθερία να διανέμεις ακριβή αντίγραφα του προγράμματος σε άλλους όποτε το επιθυμείς.

«Ελευθερία 3» είναι η ελευθερία να συμβάλλεις στην κοινότητα σου, δηλαδή η ελευθερία να μοιράζεις αντίγραφα των τροποποιημένων εκδοχών του προγράμματος σε άλλους όποτε το επιθυμείς.

Όπως μας είπε και ο Stallman.

Αν δεν πιστεύετε στα παραπάνω τότε μάλλον δεν ξέρετε γιατί χρησιμοποιήτε Ελεύθερο λογισμικό και αυτό είναι κρίμα.

Θα ήθελα να γράψω και άλλα, αλλά δεν θα είχε νόημα και θα ήταν φλύαρο.

Χτες έγινε με μεγάλη επιτυχία η ομιλία του Richard Stallman στο Νόεσις.Η ομιλία ήταν αυτό που λέμε 'μάθημα ζωής'.Είναι απίστευτη η διαφορά αναμεσα στο πόσο ελεύθερος πιστευεις ότι είσαι και στην πραγματικότητα που ανοίγετε μπροστά σου αφού τον ακούσεις.Τις προσεχείς μέρες θα κάνω εκτενή αναφορά σε όλα αυτα που έμαθα για την ζωή και την ελευθερία απλά στεκόμενος δίπλα σε αυτόν τον άνθρωπο.Προς στιγμήν σας παραθέτω μια φωτογραφία μου μαζι του και πάω να τον συναντήσω και να τον συνοδεύσω στην βόλτα του στα μουσεία της πόλης μας.

100 Εκ. Αδειες για Windows 7

Πριν από λίγο καιρό η Microsoft ανακοίνωσε την πώληση 100 εκ. αδειών χρήσεις για τα windows 7,δεν μας είπαν βέβαια πόσες από αυτές τις άδειες τις αγόρασε το κοινό με την θελησή του γιατί ζούμε σε μια χώρα που δέν μπορείς να αγοράσεις απο πουθενά ολοκληρωμένο σύστημα υπολογιστή χωρίς άδεια για windows. Επίσεις δεν μας είπαν πόσοι από αυτούς που 'αγόρασαν' την άδεια την χρησιμοποιήσαν κιόλας μιας και ξέρω αρκετό κόσμο που μόλις αγόρασε τον καινούργιο υπολογιστή του αντικατέστησε το λειτουργικό του με κάποια έκδοση Gnu/Linux ή FreeBSD.

Το είχα στο μυαλό μου καιρό να αρχίσω να μαθαίνω μια γλώσσα προγραμματισμού, είχα μιλήσει με πολλούς ανθρώπους σχετικούς με το θέμα και όλοι μου πρότειναν την ίδια γλώσσα και φυσικά μιας εγώ δεν είχα καμία άποψη για το θέμα τους άκουσα και το όνομα αυτής ...Python.
Σήμερα άρχισα το διάβασμα,το κεφάλι μου έχει γεμίσει με απορίες που δεν ξέρω καλά καλά πως να τις εκφράσω και το κεφάλι μου κάνει προσπάθεια για να χωνέψει όλα αυτά που διάβασα, παρόλα αυτά τώρα που το πήρα απόφαση θα το κάνω ο κόσμος να χαλάσει.

Ο Ορισμός του Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού

Διατηρούμε τον όρο του ελεύθερου λογισμικού για να δείξουμε ξεκάθαρα τι πρέπει να ισχύει για ένα κομμάτι λογισμικού ώστε αυτό να θεωρείται ελεύθερο. Το Ελεύθερο λογισμικό είναι ζήτημα ελευθερίας, όχι κόστους. Για να κατανοήσετε τον όρο αυτό θα πρέπει να σκέφτεστε τη λέξη free όπως ο ελεύθερος λόγος (free speech) και όχι η δωρεάν μπίρα (free beer).
Το Ελεύθερο λογισμικό παρέχει στους χρήστες την ελευθερία να εκτελούν, αντιγράφουν, διανέμουν, μελετούν, τροποποιούν και βελτιώνουν το Ελεύθερο λογισμικό. Για την ακρίβεια, αναφέρεται σε τέσσερις βασικές ελευθερίες:

Την ελευθερία να εκτελείτε το πρόγραμμα για οποιονδήποτε σκοπό (ελευθερία 0).
Την ελευθερία να μελετάτε τον τρόπο λειτουργίας του προγράμματος και να το προσαρμόζετε στις ανάγκες σας (ελευθερία 1). Η πρόσβαση στον πηγαίο κώδικα είναι προϋπόθεση για να ισχύει κάτι τέτοιο.
Την ελευθερία να αναδιανέμετε αντίγραφα του προγράμματος ώστε να βοηθάτε το συνάνθρωπο σας. (ελευθερία 2).
Την ελευθερία να βελτιώνετε το πρόγραμμα και να δημοσιεύετε τις βελτιώσεις που έχετε κάνει στο ευρύ κοινό, ώστε να επωφεληθεί ολόκληρη η κοινότητα (ελευθερία 3). Η πρόσβαση στον πηγαίο κώδικα είναι προϋπόθεση για να ισχύει κάτι τέτοιο.

Ένα πρόγραμμα θεωρείται ελεύθερο λογισμικό όταν οι χρήστες του έχουν όλες τις παραπάνω ελευθερίες. Επομένως, θα πρέπει να είστε ελεύθεροι να αναδιανέμετε αντίγραφα, με ή χωρίς τροποποιήσεις, δωρεάν ή χρεώνοντας για την διανομή, στον οποιονδήποτε και οπουδήποτε. Το να είστε ελεύθεροι να κάνετε όλα τα παραπάνω σημαίνει (μεταξύ άλλων) πως δεν χρειάζεται να ζητήσετε εξουσιοδότηση ή να πληρώσετε κάποιον ώστε να λάβετε τη ανάλογη άδεια.
Θα πρέπει επίσης να έχετε την ελευθερία να κάνετε τροποποιήσεις και να τις χρησιμοποιείτε ιδιωτικά στην δουλειά ή για διασκέδαση, χωρίς να χρειάζεται να το αναφέρετε. Αν δημοσιεύσετε τις αλλαγές σας, δεν είστε υποχρεωμένοι να ειδοποιήσετε κάποιο συγκεκριμένο άτομο.
Η ελευθερία της χρήσης ενός προγράμματος σημαίνει πως δίδεται η ελευθερία σε κάθε άτομο ή επιχείρηση να το χρησιμοποιήσει σε κάθε είδους υπολογιστικό σύστημα, για κάθε είδος εργασίας χωρίς να είναι υποχρεωμένο να επικοινωνήσει εκ των προτέρων με τον προγραμματιστή ή με κάποια άλλη οντότητα. Σε αυτή την ελευθερία, είναι η άποψη του χρήστη που έχει σημασία, και όχι η άποψη του κατασκευαστή. Εσείς, ως χρήστες είστε ελεύθεροι να εκτελείτε το πρόγραμμα για τους δικούς σας λόγους, και αν το διανέμετε σε οποιονδήποτε άλλο άνθρωπο, τότε και εκείνος είναι ελεύθερος να το εκτελεί για τους δικούς του λόγους, δίχως να έχετε το δικαίωμα να του υποβάλετε δικές σας κυρώσεις.
Η ελευθερία της αναδιανομής αντιγράφων θα πρέπει να περιλαμβάνει εκτελέσιμες (executable) μορφές του προγράμματος, καθώς και τον πηγαίο κώδικα, τόσο για την τροποποιημένη όσο και για την αρχική έκδοση του προγράμματος. (Η διανομή προγραμμάτων σε εκτελέσιμη μορφή είναι απαραίτητη για εγκατεστημένα ελεύθερα λειτουργικά συστήματα). Θεωρείται δεκτό όταν δεν υπάρχει τρόπος να δημιουργηθεί η εκτελέσιμη μορφή για κάποιο συγκεκριμένο πρόγραμμα (από τη στιγμή που μερικές γλώσσες δεν υποστηρίζουν κάτι τέτοιο), αλλά θα πρέπει να έχετε την ελευθερία να αναδιανέμετε τέτοιες μορφές σε περίπτωση που αναπτύξετε ή βρείτε κάποιο δικό σας τρόπο να τις δημιουργήσετε).
Για να ισχύουν πρακτικά οι τέσσερις βασικές ελευθερίες, και να μπορείτε να δημοσιεύετε βελτιωμένες εκδόσεις, θα πρέπει να έχετε πρόσβαση στον πηγαίο κώδικα του προγράμματος. Επομένως, η πρόσβαση στον πηγαίο κώδικα είναι απαραίτητη προϋπόθεση στο ελεύθερο λογισμικό.
Μία σημαντική μέθοδος τροποποίησης ενός προγράμματος είναι η συγχώνευση του με διαθέσιμες ελεύθερες υπορουτίνες και υποπρογράμματα (modules). Εάν η άδεια του προγράμματος αναφέρει ότι δεν έχετε το δικαίωμα να το συγχωνεύσετε με ένα υπάρχον υποπρόγραμμα, για παράδειγμα εάν απαιτεί να είστε εσείς αυτός που κατέχει τα πνευματικά δικαιώματα (copyright holder) για οποιονδήποτε κώδικα έχετε προσθέσει, τότε η άδεια είναι πολύ περιοριστική ώστε να μπορεί να θεωρηθεί ελεύθερη (δηλαδή άδεια ελεύθερου λογισμικού).
Αυτές οι ελευθερίες θα είναι πραγματικές και αμετάκλητες όσο δεν κάνετε κάτι λάθος. Αν ο προγραμματιστής του λογισμικού ανακαλέσει την άδεια, χωρίς να έχετε δώσει εσείς την αφορμή τότε το λογισμικό δεν θεωρείται ελεύθερο.
Ωστόσο, μερικοί κανόνες που αφορούν τον τρόπο με τον οποίο διανέμεται το ελεύθερο λογισμικό είναι αποδεκτοί όταν δεν συγκρούονται με τις τέσσερις βασικές ελευθερίες. Για παράδειγμα, στην άδεια αντιγραφής (copyleft) όταν αναδιανέμετε κάποιο πρόγραμμα, δεν μπορείτε να προσθέσετε περιορισμούς ώστε να μειώσετε από τον χρήστη τις τέσσερις βασικές ελευθερίες. Αυτός ο κανόνας δεν συγκρούεται με τις βασικές ελευθερίες, αλλά τις προστατεύει.
Μπορεί να έχετε πληρώσει για να προμηθευτείτε κάποια αντίγραφα ελεύθερου λογισμικού, ή να έχετε προμηθευτεί τα αντίγραφα χωρίς κάποια οικονομική επιβάρυνση. Ανεξαρτήτως όμως από τον τρόπο προμήθειας, θα πρέπει πάντα να έχετε την ελευθερία να τροποποιείτε το λογισμικό, ακόμα και να πουλάτε αντίγραφα του.
Ελεύθερο λογισμικό δεν σημαίνει μη-εμπορικό. Ένα ελεύθερο πρόγραμμα θα πρέπει να είναι διαθέσιμο για εμπορική χρήση, εμπορική ανάπτυξη ή εμπορική διανομή. Η εμπορική ανάπτυξη του ελευθέρου λογισμικού δεν είναι ασυνήθιστη. Αντιθέτως, τέτοιου είδους ελεύθερο λογισμικό είναι πολύ σημαντικό να υπάρχει.
Κανόνες για την διαδικασία πακεταρίσματος (packaging) μίας τροποποιημένης έκδοσης είναι αποδεκτοί όταν δεν σας περιορίζουν ουσιαστικά την ελευθερία να δημοσιεύετε τις διάφορες τροποποιημένες εκδόσεις. Κανόνες του τύπου εάν διαθέσετε το πρόγραμμα με τον τάδε τρόπο θα πρέπει να τον διαθέσετε επίσης και με τον δείνα τρόπο είναι αποδεκτοί, με την ίδια προϋπόθεση. (Σημειώστε ότι ένας τέτοιος κανόνας σας δίνει επίσης τη δυνατότητα να μη δημοσιεύσετε την δική σας έκδοση του προγράμματος καθόλου). Κανόνες οι οποίοι απαιτούν τη δημοσίευση του πηγαίου κώδικα στους χρήστες των προγραμμάτων όλων των εκδόσεων που έχετε διαθέσει δημόσια είναι επίσης αποδεκτοί. Επίσης είναι αποδεκτό σε μία άδεια ελεύθερου λογισμικού να υπάρχουν και άλλου είδους απαιτήσεις, όπως πχ εάν έχετε διανέμει μία τροποποιημένη έκδοση ενός προγράμματος και κάποιος προηγούμενος κατασκευαστής ζητήσει αντίγραφο του, θα πρέπει να του αποστείλετε ένα, ή να δηλώσετε τον εαυτό σας στις μετατροπές που κάνατε.
Στο έργο GNU, χρησιμοποιούμε την άδεια αντιγραφής (copyleft) για να προστατεύσουμε αυτές τις ελευθερίες νομικά και για όλους. Βέβαια υπάρχει και ελεύθερο λογισμικό το οποίο δεν χρησιμοποιεί την άδεια αντιγραφής (non-copylefted). Προσωπικά, πιστεύουμε ότι υπάρχουν αρκετοί σημαντικοί λόγοι για τους οποίους θα πρέπει να προτιμάτε τη χρήση της άδειας αντιγραφής. Παρόλα αυτά, ακόμη και στην περίπτωση που το πρόγραμμα σας δεν δημοσιεύεται υπό την άδεια αντιγραφής, μπορούμε να το χρησιμοποιήσουμε.
Δείτε τις Κατηγορίες Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού για μία αναφορά της συσχέτισης μεταξύ εννοιών όπως ελεύθερο λογισμικό, λογισμικό που χρησιμοποιεί την άδεια αντιγραφής, καθώς και άλλων κατηγοριών λογισμικού.
Πολλές φορές κρατικοί κανονισμοί έλεγχου εξαγωγών και εμπορικά σωματεία (trade sanctions) μπορούν να περιορίσουν την ελευθερία σας να διανέμετε αντίγραφα προγραμμάτων παγκοσμίως. Οι προγραμματιστές δεν μπορούν να εξουδετερώσουν ή να παρακάμψουν τέτοιους περιορισμούς, αλλά αυτό που μπορούν και πρέπει να κάνουν είναι να αρνηθούν να τους επιβάλλουν για την χρήση του προγράμματος. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, οι περιορισμοί δεν θα επηρεάσουν δραστηριότητες και ανθρώπους εκτός της δικαιοδοσίας αυτών των κυβερνήσεων.
Οι περισσότερες άδειες ελεύθερου λογισμικού βασίζονται στα πνευματικά δικαιώματα (copyright) και υπάρχουν όρια ως προς το είδος των απαιτήσεων που μπορούν να επιβληθούν μέσω αυτών. Εάν μία άδεια βασισμένη στα πνευματικά δικαιώματα σέβεται την ελευθερία με βάση την παραπάνω περιγραφή, είναι απίθανο να έχει κάποιο άλλο πρόβλημα που δεν είναι αναμενόμενο (αν και αυτό συμβαίνει περιστασιακά). Ωστόσο, κάποιες άδειες ελεύθερου λογισμικού είναι βασισμένες σε συμβόλαια και τα συμβόλαια μπορούν να επιβάλλουν ένα πολύ μεγαλύτερο εύρος περιορισμών. Αυτό σημαίνει πως υπάρχουν πολλοί τρόποι με τους οποίους μία τέτοια άδεια μπορεί να είναι απαράδεκτα περιοριστική και ανελεύθερη.
Δεν είναι δυνατόν να αναφέρουμε όλους τους πιθανούς περιορισμούς συμβολαίων που θα ήταν μη αποδεκτοί. Εάν μία άδεια βασισμένη σε συμβόλαια περιορίζει τον χρήστη κατά ένα παράξενο τρόπο που οι άδειες βασισμένες στα πνευματικά δικαιώματα αδυνατούν, και ο οποίος δεν αναφέρεται εδώ ως νόμιμος, θα πρέπει να το σκεφτούμε και πιθανότατα θα αποφασίσουμε πως είναι ανελεύθερη.
Όταν μιλάμε για το ελεύθερο λογισμικό, είναι καλό να αποφεύγουμε όρους όπως το δίνει έτσι (give away) ή δωρεάν (for free), διότι αυτοί υπονοούν ότι το θέμα είναι το κόστος και όχι η ελευθερία. Κάποιοι δημοφιλείς όροι όπως πειρατεία ενσωματώνουν απόψεις που ελπίζουμε πως δεν θα ασπαστείτε. Δείτε το άρθρο Λέξεις που προκαλούν σύγχυση και πρέπει να αποφεύγονται για μία συζήτηση σχετικά με αυτούς τους όρους. Τέλος, αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως κριτήρια σαν και αυτά που υπάρχουν στον ορισμό του ελεύθερου λογισμικού απαιτούν προσεκτική σκέψη για την ερμηνεία τους. Για να αποφασιστεί κατά πόσο μία συγκεκριμένη άδεια κατατάσσεται ως άδεια ελεύθερου λογισμικού, την κρίνουμε για το κατά πόσο πληρεί το πνεύμα και την πληρότητα των κριτηρίων. Εάν μία άδεια επιβάλλει παράλογους περιορισμούς, την απορρίπτουμε, ακόμα και αν δεν τους αναμέναμε στα κριτήρια. Πολλές φορές ή απαίτηση κάποιας άδειας δημιουργεί ένα ζήτημα που απαιτεί εκτενή σκέψη, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και συζητήσεων με δικηγόρο, πριν αποφασίσουμε αν η απαίτηση είναι αποδεκτή. Όταν καταλήγουμε σε ένα συμπέρασμα για ένα καινούργιο θέμα, συχνά ανανεώνουμε αυτά τα κριτήρια για να είναι πιο εύκολο να δούμε εάν συγκεκριμένες άδειες είναι δεκτές ή όχι.

Το Βαρόμετρο - Πανεπιστήμιο της Κοπεγχάγης

Το κείµενο που ακολουθεί αφορά µια ερώτηση που ήταν θέµα σε εξετάσεις Φυσικής στο Πανεπιστήµιο της Κοπεγχάγης:

«Να περιγράψετε πώς µπορούµε να µετρήσουµε το ύψος ενός ουρανοξύστη χρησιµοποιώντας
ένα ßαρόµετρο».

Ένας φοιτητής απάντησε: «Δένετε ένα µακρύ σπάγγο στο λαιµό του ßαρόµετρου και στη
συνέχεια κατεßάζετε το ßαρόµετρο από την ταράτσα µέχρι να εγγίζει το έδαφος. Το ύψος
του κτιρίου θα ισούται µε το µήκος του νήµατος συν το µήκος του ßαρόµετρου».

Αυτή η πρωτότυπη απάντηση εξόργισε τόσο τον εξεταστή, ώστε αυτός έκοψε το φοιτητή στο
συγκεκριµένο µάθηµα. Ο φοιτητής προσέφυγε στις αρχές του Πανεπιστηµίου, ισχυριζόµενος ότι η απάντησή του ήταν αναµφίßολα σωστή και ότι αδίκως κόπηκε.

Το Πανεπιστήµιο όρισε έναν άλλο εξεταστή να διερευνήσει το θέµα και να αποφασίσει εάν
έπρεπε να κοπεί ο φοιτητής ή όχι. Ο κριτής αυτός θεώρησε ότι η απάντηση που δόθηκε ήταν πράγµατι σωστή, αλλά δεν φανέρωνε καµία αξιοσηµείωτη γνώση Φυσικής.

Για να διαλευκανθεί τελείως το θέµα, αποφασίστηκε να καλέσουν το φοιτητή και να του αφήσουν έξι λεπτά, µέσα στα οποία αυτός θα έπρεπε να δώσει µια προφορική απάντηση που να µην είναι τόσο απλοϊκή, αλλά να δείχνει κάποια εξοικείωση µε τις ßασικές αρχές της Φυσικής.

Για πέντε λεπτά ο φοιτητής έµενε σιωπηλός, ßαθιά απορροφηµένος στις σκέψεις του. Ο εξεταστής του θύµισε ότι ο χρόνος τελειώνει και ο φοιτητής απάντησε ότι είχε στο µυαλό του µερικές ιδιαίτερα σχετικές απαντήσεις, αλλά δε µπορούσε να αποφασίσει ποια να χρησιµοποιήσει. Στην προτροπή να ßιαστεί, απάντησε ως εξής:

«Κατ' αρχήν, θα µπορούσαµε να ανεßάσουµε το ßαρόµετρο στην ταράτσα του ουρανοξύστη, να
το αφήσουµε να πέσει και να µετρήσουµε το χρόνο που κάνει µέχρι να φτάσει στο έδαφος. Το ύψος του κτιρίου µπορεί να υπολογιστείτότε από τον τύπο: H=(gt 2)/2. Όµως, δε θα το συνιστούσα γιατί θα ήταν κρίµα για το ßαρόµετρο».

«Μια άλλη εναλλακτική απάντηση» είπε ο φοιτητής «είναι η εξής: Εάν υπάρχει ηλιοφάνεια, θα µπορούσαµε να µετρήσουµε το ύψος του ßαρόµετρου, να το στήσουµε όρθιο στο έδαφος και µετά να µετρήσουµε του µήκος της σκιάς του. Στη συνέχεια µετρούµε το µήκος της σκιάς του ουρανοξύστη, και µε απλό τρόπο µπορούµε να υπολογίσουµε το πραγµατικό ύψος του ουρανοξύστη µε αριθµητική
αναλογία».

«Αλλά, εάν θα θέλατε να αντιµετωπίσετε το θέµα µε ιδιαίτερα επιστηµονικό τρόπο, θα
µπορούσατε να δέσετε ένα µικρού µήκους νήµα στο ßαρόµετρο και να το θέσετε σε
ταλάντωση σαν εκκρεµές, πρώτα στο έδαφος και µετά στην ταράτσα του ουρανοξύστη. Το ύψος θα µπορούσε να ßρεθεί µετρώντας και συγκρίνοντας τις δύο περιόδους, οι οποίες είναι αντιστρόφως
ανάλογες των τετραγωνικών ριζών των επιταχύνσεων της ßαρύτητας στο έδαφος και στο ύψος του ουρανοξύστη. Η επιτάχυνση της ßαρύτητας εξαρτάται µε τη σειρά της από τούψος από την επιφάνεια της γης και συνεπώς γνωρίζοντας την επιτάχυνση της ßαρύτητας στην ταράτσα ßρίσκουµε το ζητούµενο ύψος».

«Α!»είπε πάλι ο φοιτητής, «Υπάρχει κι ένας άλλος τρόπος, όχι κακός: Αν ο ουρανοξύστης διαθέτει
εξωτερική σκάλα κινδύνου, θα ήταν ευκολότερο να ανεßεί κανείς τη σκάλα ßάζοντας διαδοχικά σηµάδια επαναλαµßάνοντας το µήκος του ßαρόµετρου.
Μετά θα ήταν εύκολο να υπολογίσει το ύψος του ουρανοξύστη προσθέτοντας όλα αυτά τα
µήκη.

Αλλά, αν απλώς θα θέλατε να είστε ιδιαίτερα ßαρετός δίνοντας µια ορθόδοξη απάντηση, θα
µπορούσατε να µετρήσετε την ατµοσφαιρική πίεση στην ταράτσα και στο έδαφος και να µετατρέψετε τη διαφορά των millibars σε ανάλογη διαφορά σε µέτρα.»

«Όµως, επειδή ως φοιτητές παροτρυνόµαστε συνέχεια να ασκούµε την ανεξαρτησία του µυαλού µας και να εφαρµόζουµε επιστηµονικές µεθόδους,αναµφίßολα ο καλύτερος τρόπος θα ήταν να χτυπήσουµε την πόρτα του θυρωρού και να του πούµε:

Αν θα ήθελες να έχεις ένα ωραίο καινούριο ßαρόµετρο, θα σου χαρίσω αυτό αν µου πεις το
ύψος του ουρανοξύστη».Ο φοιτητής ήταν ο Niels Bohr, ο µόνος Δανός που τιµήθηκε µε το ßραßείο Νόµπελ Φυσικής.

28 Χρόνια μετά επιστρέφει και μαλιστα με τον Jeff Bridges.Η πρώτη ταινία τα σπάει ακόμα και σήμερα και το καλύτερο ίσως απο όλα είναι οτι δεν είναι ακόμη ένα Remake αλλά η συνέχεια της ταινίας.
To Trailer μας προϊδεάζει για τα καταπληκτηκά εφέ που πρόκειτε να δούμε,αναμένουμε σε αναμένα κάρβουνα...

Παραλογισμός Ευρεσιτεχνιών:Πως οι πατέντες λογισμικού έσπασαν το σύστημα

Πρόσφατα μου ήρθε μέσω μέηλ το λινκ για ενα πολυ ενδιαφερον Ντοκυμαντέρ γύρω απο τις πατέντες λογισμικού του Luca Lucarini το οποίο υποστηρίζετε απο το Free Software Foundation .Κατεβάστε το,νόμιμα μιας και εχει άδεια Creative commons και δείτε το,εγώ το βρηκα πολύ ενδιαφέρον,επίσεις να πω ότι μαζεύω ομαδα για να δημιουργήσουμε Ελληνικούς υπότιτλους,όποιος μπορεί και ξέρει ας στείλει ένα μέηλ.

Η Ένωση Ελλήνων Χρηστών & Φίλων Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού / Λογισμικού Ανοικτού Κώδικα έχει την τιμή να σας ενημερώσει για την αποδοχή της πρόσκλησης που απεύθυνε στον ιδρυτή και πρόεδρο του Ιδρύματος Ελεύθερου Λογισμικού, Richard M. Stallman για να παραθέσει μία ομιλία στη Θεσσαλονίκη.
Κατόπιν επικοινωνίας που προηγήθηκε μαζί του, αποδέχτηκε την πρόσκλησή μας στο πλαίσιο της παγκόσμιας περιοδείας του.

Η επίσκεψη του Richard Stallman θα πραγματοποιηθεί στα τέλη του επόμενου μήνα, Μαΐου 2010.
